Valencia Baseball Team Chases Harvard-Westlake Star Starter

khts_sportsThe Valencia High baseball team pounded one of the top pitching prospects in the nation in the final game of the Easton Tournament.

The Vikings roughed up Harvard-Westlake left-hander Max Fried for seven runs on 10 hits in a stunning 11-4 win.

AJ Balta drove in six runs and was 4-for-5 for Valencia in the game. Trey Williams hit a home run, drove in two runs and was 3-for-4.

The Hart softball team won its first two games of the Hart Tournament and advanced to the semifinals.

The Indians beat Newbury Park, 12-1, in the first game, and then followed, 13-4, over Oxnard.

The West Ranch softball team won its first two games of the Hart Tournament as well.

The Wildcats beat Lancaster, 15-0, in the first game. The second game was a little tighter, 7-6, over Moorpark.

In high school track and field, Canyon set five meet records at the Santa Clarita Valley Track Invitational over the weekend.

Tiffini Stone won the long jump in 17 feet, 6 inches, and the triple jump in 36 feet, 3 inches. Both were meet records.

She was also on the record-setting 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team which won in 4 minutes, 19.72 seconds.

Taylor Thomas won the 100-meter hurdles in a meet record 14.84 seconds.

Robert Wolfe set the meet record by winning the pole vault, 13 feet, 10 inches.

Two Golden Valley relay teams set records at the meet as well. The boys 4×1,600 and 4×800 relay teams won their races in record-setting times.

In high school football, Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman will continue his career in college at Graceland University.

Soliman will play at the NAIA school in Iowa in the fall.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley finished in fourth place in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season opener at Phoenix International Raceway.

Pursley is the reigning West Series champion. David Mayhew won the race.

Valencia High graduate Connor Cantrell had an impressive debut in sprint cars at Ventura Raceway. He finished 10th in his first sprint car race in the season opener on Saturday night.
