Valencia Baseball Team Drops 17 On Moorpark In CIF Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Valencia baseball team needed a few innings to warm up its bats. But once the Vikings started hitting, they didn’t stop.

Valencia beat Moorpark, 17-7, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs. Valencia scored eights runs in the fifth inning capped by a two-run home run by James Bonds.

The Vikings were trailing, 6-3, in the third inning. Adam Lightfoot highlighted a five-run rally with a base-loaded double that scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Valencia took an 8-6 lead and rolled the rest of the way.

Valencia moves on to play Dana Hills in the second round on Tuesday.


The Hart baseball team jumped out to an early lead and held off Los Alamitos, 5-4, in their first round Division 1 playoff game.

Dallas Bacon hit a two-run home run in the first inning as Hart built a 5-1 lead through six innings. Tyler Glasnow started for Hart and pitched six innings, giving up the lone run.

Hart plays Mater Dei of Santa Ana, the reigning Division 1 champs, at home on Tuesday in the second round of the playoffs.

The Valencia softball team beat Edison of Huntington Beach, 10-1, behind a complete-game gem from Carly Mortensen. The Valencia starter was sidelined for much of the Foothill League season with an arm injury. She struck out four and walked one.

Justine Sibthorp hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Kristina Brackpool went 2-for-5 with a three-run double in the second inning.

Valencia advances to the second round and plays Vista Murrieta on Tuesday.

Saugus runners Stephanie Bulder and Kaylin Mahoney won races at the CIF Southern Section track and field championships at Cerritos College.

Bulder won the 1,600 and Mahoney won the 3,200. It was Mahoney’s second CIF Southern Section championship. She won the 3,200 as a sophomore in 2009.

Three Saugus runners finished in the top five in the 3,200. Bulder was third and Karis Frankian was fourth.

The Saugus girls track and field team finished second in the Division II meet, the second time in three years the Centurions finished in the top two. Saugus won the CIF Southern Section Division II championship last year.

Mater Dei won this year’s meet with 64 points. Saugus scored 51.

Five of the six schools in the Foothill League will send at least one athlete to the CIF Masters Meet. There will be 19 representatives from Foothill League schools at the Masters Meet.

In high school tennis, Canyon’s Jason Ferlianto lost, 6-1, 7-6, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section boys individual tournament at Cate School in Carpineteria.

Valencia’s JR Macalutas and Anders Jansson, the Foothill League doubles champions, lost, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round.

None of the six players from the Foothill League advanced past the first round.

The West Ranch boys basketball team has a new coach. Shant Bicakci will take over the Wildcats basketball team next season.

Bicakci is a graduate of Saugus High School and played for the Centurions boys basketball team. He graduated in 2005.

In the Amgen Tour of California, Chris Horner from Bend, Ore., won the race for the first time in his career, maintaining his lead in the final stage from Santa Clarita to Thousand Oaks.

Horner and teammate Levi Leipheimer finished first and second in the seven-day race that started in the Sierra Nevadas and ended in Southern California.

In auto racing, Dan Wheldon, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport, qualified sixth for the Indianapolis 500. Wheldon, who won the Indy 500 in 2005, will start Sunday’s race on the outside of row two.

Alex Tagliani was the surprise pole winner. Scott Dixon will start second and Oriol Servia qualified third to make up the front row for the Indy 500.

In the NBA playoffs, the Miami Heat won Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, 96-85, over the Chicago Bulls. The Heat has a 2-1 lead. Game 4 is Tuesday night in Miami.

In the NHL playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks, 4-2, in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. The Canucks lead the series, 3-1. Game 5 is Tuesday night in Vancouver.
