Valencia Baseball Team Wins Foothill League Championship

khts_sportsThe Valencia baseball team won the Foothill League championship with a 6-2 win over Canyon.

Valencia scored five runs in the first inning. James Bonds capped the outburst with a two-run home run.

Quincy Quintero knocked in two runs with a double.

The Hart baseball team beat Golden Valley, 4-1, and finished a game behind Valencia in second place in the Foothill League standings.

Alex Tenorio drove in two runs and Steve Rosso was 2-for-3 with two doubles for Hart. Starter Garrett Gooding went six innings and struck out six. He gave up a run on eight hits.

The West Ranch baseball team beat Saugus, 8-4, behind a strong performance from Steven Farnworth on the mound and at the plate. He was 3-for-3 and drove in a run. He went six innings and gave up four runs on eight hits.

Dakota Hernandez was 4-for-5 and drove in two runs for West Ranch. The Wildcats finished in third place in league. The top three teams, Valencia, Hart and West Ranch, earned CIF playoff spots.

Golden Valley finished in fourth place in league, but has a 13-12 overall record and can apply for an at-large bid in playoffs.

CIF Southern Section playoff pairings with be announced this afternoon.

In the CIF tennis playoffs, the Valencia boys lost to Beverly Hills, 12-6, in the second round and was eliminated from the Division II bracket.

Valencia was the fourth-seeded team in the playoffs and came into the match against Beverly Hills undefeated at 20-0.

The West Ranch boys lost to Santa Monica, 13-5, and were eliminated in the second round of the Division II playoffs. Beverly Hills, the third-seeded team in the playoffs, swept all nine singles sets.

The track and field teams from the Foothill League fared well in the CIF Southern Section preliminary meets.

Canyon’s Kenny Stone qualified in four events. He will compete in the 200 and 400 in the CIF Southern Section Division II finals at Cerritos College. He is also on Canyon’s 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relay teams.

The 4-by-100 team of Max Archuleta, Dominic Pennuci, Darius Rudolph and Stone set the Foothill League record with a time of 42.00 seconds.

James Weiner from Saugus qualified in three events. He will compete in the 100, 200 and on the 4-by-100 relay team.

Canyon’s Sam Willis qualified for the 1,600 and Hart’s Tim White will compete in the high jump in the Division II finals.

On the girls side, Canyon’s Tiffini Stone and Taylor Thomas each qualified in three events. Stone made the long jump, triple jump and as part of the 4-by-100 relay team.

Thomas will compete in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and on the 4-by-100 relay team.

Jenna Vincej from Saugus qualified in three events, the 200, 400 and on the 4-by-400 relay team.

Kaylin Mahoney, Stephanie Bulder and Jessica McCall from Saugus qualified in the 3,200.

Danielle Zirbel from Saugus qualified for the shot put.

Valencia’s Faith Anumba qualified in two events in the Southern Section Division I finals. She broke the league record in the triple jump and also qualified in the long jump.

West Ranch’s Jennifer Owen and Ashley Welker each qualified in the 800.

Golden Valley’s Kristian Martinez qualified in two events for the Division III finals. He will compete in the 800 and on the 4-by-400 relay team.

In the CIF boys volleyball playoffs, Valencia lost to Beckman in five games and was eliminated from the Division II bracket in the quarterfinals.

Valencia was the third-seeded team in the playoffs. Eric Ensing led Valencia with 18 kills. Broc Oppler added 16 kills and four blocks.

In the NHL playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Vancouver.

In the NBA playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Memphis Grizzlies, 105-90, in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The Thunder advances and will play the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference finals.

The Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat, 103-82, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Game 2 is Wednesday in Chiacgo.
