The Valencia boys basketball team got the 12th seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs and will host Oxnard in the first round on Thursday night.
Valencia won the Foothill League championship and is in the top half of the playoff bracket. Oxnard is the third-place team from the Pacific View League.
If Valencia wins its first-round game, the Vikings could face Murrieta Valley, the fifth-seeded team in the Division 1AA playoffs, in the second round.
Long Beach Poly, the champions of the Moore League, earned the No. 1 seed in the Division 1AA playoffs.
The Canyon boys basketball team is the 14th seed in the Division 2AA playoffs and will travel to Buena in the first round. Canyon finished second in the Foothill League standings. Buena is the second-place team from the Channel League.
The Hart boys basketball team is on the road in the first round of the Division 3AA playoffs. The Indians will play Arroyo Grande, the 15th seed in the 3AA playoffs and the second-place team from the PAC 7 League.
The West Ranch boys basketball team got a tough draw in the first round. The Wildcats will play Ventura, the top seed in the Division 2AA playoffs and the champions of the Channel League.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team is the No. 3 seed in the Division 6AA playoffs. The Cardinals will play Nuview Bridge in the first round.
The Canyon girls basketball team is the fifth seed in the Division 2AA playoffs and will play Valley View in the first round on Thursday night.
Canyon won the Foothill League championship. Valley View is the third-place team from the Inland Valley League.
Saugus is the No. 13 seed in the Division 2AA playoffs and will be home in the first round against Marina from the Sunset League.
The West Ranch girls got the No. 14 seed in the Division 2AA playoffs and will be on the road for a tough first-round game. The Wildcats will play ninth-seeded Royal, the co-champions of the Marmonte League.
The Valencia girls are the eighth seed in the Division 1A playoffs and will play Diamond Bar in the first round.
The Hart girls are the No. 16 seed in the Division 3AA playoffs and will play ninth-seeded Torrance in the first round.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team will play in the wild-card round of the Division 6A playoffs on Thursday night. The Cardinals will be on the road against St. Monica Academy.
In college basketball, The Master’s College men beat Pt. Loma Nazarene, 73-72, in overtime. Five players from The Master’s College scored in double figures, led by Anthony Cammon’s 15.
The Master’s College women beat Pt. Loma Nazarene, 77-58, and snapped a two-game learning streak.
Theresa Brown scored 16 points to lead The Master’s College.
In college baseball, The Master’s College swept a double-header against William Carey. The Mustangs won the first game, 8-6, and the second game, 4-1.
In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the Orlando Magic, 89-75, and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum each scored 17 points for the Lakers, which lost for the first time on their seven-game road trip.
Dwight Howard poured in 31 points and had 13 rebounds for the Magic.
The Lakers are in Charlotte tonight for a game against the Bobcats, stop No. 5 of their seven-game roadie.
In hockey, the Kings shut out the Philadelphia Flyers, 1-0, and won their second game in a row.
Drew Doughty scored the lone goal of the game in the second period. Goaltender Jonathan Quick made 40 saves and recorded his sixth shutout of the season.
The Kings have won four of the past five games and are 4-2 on their current 10-game road trip.
Next up for the Kings are the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
The Dodgers and first baseman James Loney avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year, $4.8 million deal over the weekend. Loney hit a career-worst .261 with 10 home runs last season. He also hit a career-high 41 doubles and drove in 88 runs.
