Valencia Boys Basketball Team Topples Golden Valley, Campbell Hall

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys basketball team is learning to live and win without Lonnie Jackson, who has missed the past three games with a foot injury.

Valencia had no problem against Golden Valley, winning by 30 points, 63-33. Zach Davis scored a team-high 15 points for Valencia. Troy Hammel, who is playing in place of Jackson, and Max Sommer each scored 13 points for Valencia.

Jake Kelfer stepped up with seven 3-pointers in a 70-67 win over Campbell Hall in the War on the Floor Showcase at Pierce College on Saturday night.

Kelfer scored 26 points and led four players in double figures. Hammel, Sommer and Davis each scored 10 points against Campbell Hall.


In other Foothill League action, the Hart boys won their first league game since 2009, downing West Ranch, 60-58.

Hart’s Roman Delgado ended an 11-game league losing streak with a steal and a layup with six seconds left in the game. He scored 22 points to lead Hart.

West Ranch’s Ako Kaluna scored 14 points and had 15 rebounds even though he sat out spurts of the game in foul trouble. Justin Ballenger also scored 14 points for West Ranch.

The Saugus boys beat Canyon, 82-74 in overtime, behind 26 points from Jeremy Gatewood. He scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Jon Hong scored all eight of his points in overtime for Saugus.

Clay Kasdorf scored a game-high 31 points. Teammate Darnel Haggerty scored 18.

On the girls side, Valencia had a busy weekend. A night after beating Golden Valley, 64-21, the Valencia girls routed Rio Mesa, 64-38, in the Buena Shootout on Saturday.

Lauren Spargo scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds against Rio Mesa. She had 14 points in her team’s win over Golden Valley.

West Ranch beat Hart, 58-49. Alexus Bryant scored 24 points to lead West Ranch.

The Canyon girls beat Saugus, 42-39. Adriana Dent scored 13 points to lead Canyon. Megan Dawe had a team-high 10 points for Saugus.

The Lakers lost to the Clippers, 99-92, ending their seven-game winning streak. Eric Gordon scored 30 points for the Clippers. Four Lakers, including Lamar Odom, were ejected at the end of game for pushing and shoving after a fight for a rebound.

The Clippers have won four of their past five games. The Lakers will try to get back on track against the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight at Staples Center.

The Kings are on the road for a game against the Dallas Stars tonight. The Kings are coming off a much-needed 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. The win ended a disappointing 2-6 homestand at Staples Center.

The Stars have won four games in a row, including 6-1 over the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday night.
