Valencia Boys Go 5-0 in High School Tennis Classic

sportslocalIt’s not often high school tennis leads the sports report, but the Valencia boys team put on quite a display over the weekend.

The Valencia boys went 5-0 in the 26th annual California High School Tennis Classic at Buchanan High School in Clovis, taking down some of the top teams in the state.

Valencia beat East Bakersfield, El Diamante of Visalia, Buchanan, Los Altos and Corona Del Mar. Valencia’s No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Bingham and Daniel Bogan went undefeated as did No. 3 singles player J.R. Macalutas.

In high school baseball, Hart won its first game of the year, downing Thousand Oaks, 3-1, in the Easton Tournament. Josh Wagner earned the win in relief, striking out two batters in two innings. He also had an RBI double in the seventh inning.

In high school softball, Valencia poured on the runs against El Dorado, 10-1. Madison Shipman went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Lauren Boser was 3-for-4 with two doubles, Justine Sibthorp drove in two runs with a sacrifice and a double and Carly Mortensen struck out nine to earn the win.

In high school volleyball, the Saugus boys came from behind and beat Chaminade in five games. After losing the first two games, Saugus rallied to win the next three. Matt Coleman recorded 23 kills, Sean Picard added 18 and Ryan Mason posted 53 assists for Saugus.

In college baseball, The Master’s College nearly coughed up a three-run lead, but held on for a 3-2 win over Vanguard. The Master’s College gave up two runs to Vanguard in the ninth inning.

Parker Price went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in another for The Master’s College.

The Lakers have their first three-game losing streak since Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol became teammates after the Orlando Magic beat them, 96-94.

The difference came on a 3-point basket by Bryant that would have tied the game with 12 seconds left in the game. But the refs reviewed the shot and decided it was only a two-point basket, leaving the Lakers down by one.

Vince Carter scored 25 points to lead the Magic. Bryant literally gutted this one out, scoring 34 points despite playing with a stomach illness. Gasol scored 20 points in the loss.

Dodgers catcher Russell Martin might miss the start of the season with a groin pull, ESPN is reporting. The Dodgers all-star catcher is expected to miss four to six weeks while recovering from the injury. The start of the season is April 5 in Pittsburgh, four weeks from today.

The Dodgers are in Glendale, Ariz., for spring training. Martin is reportedly going to be in Los Angeles for more tests on his injury today.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
