The Valencia boys soccer team won the San Gabriel Valley Classic by the narrowest of margins at Monrovia High School.
Valencia played two games, the semifinals and the final, and won both on penalty kicks.
In the championship game against Sierra Vista of Baldwin Park, the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation. Josh Motto and Matt Peters each scored a goal for Valencia.
Valencia won the championship game, 4-2, on penalty kicks. Peters knocked in the deciding goal and gave the Valencia boys their first tournament championship in school history.
The semifinal game against Garey High of Pomona was played to a scoreless draw. Valencia won the semifinal, 3-2, on penalty kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Cunningham made his share of stops in the penalty kick portions of the games.
Valencia is undefeated at 8-0 after winning the soccer tournament.

The Saugus boys basketball team won the seventh-place game of the San Fernando Valley Invitational at Alemany High School.
Saugus beat El Camino Real, 81-63, behind 31 points from Jeremy Gatewood. Brad Buchignani scored 24 points and had seven rebounds for Saugus.
The West Ranch boys basketball team beat Crescenta Valley, 72-51, in the ninth-place game of the San Fernando Valley Invitational.
Ako Kaluna scored a team-high 19 points and had 15 rebounds for West Ranch.
Crespi won the San Fernando Valley Invitational championship game, 78-53, over Alemany.
The Kings are back home for a game against the Edmonton Oilers tonight. The Kings are coming off a 5-0 shutout over the Colorado Avalanche.
The Oilers lost to the San Jose Sharks, 2-1, on Wednesday night.
Marco Sturm, who the Kings acquired in a trade with the Boston Bruins, will make his Staples Center debut. Listen to the game tonight on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 7:30.
