Valencia Boys Volleyball Sweeps Highland In First Round Of CIF Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys volleyball team made quick work of Highland in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Valencia won in three games. Eric Ensing led Valencia with 10 kills. Broc Oppler had nine kills and 15 digs. Kurt Fults matched Oppler with nine kills.

Valencia, the third-seeded team in the Division II playoffs, will play Righetti in the second round on Thursday night.


The Hart boys volleyball team won its first-round Southern Section Division II playoff match in four games against Quartz Hill. Hart’s JJ Mosolf had a match-high 28 kills.

Hart won the first game, but lost the second before taking the last two games in dominant fashion.

Hart will face top-seeded Corona Del Mar in the second round on Thursday.

The Golden Valley boys volleyball team lost to Trabuco Hills in four games in the first round of the playoffs. But the Grizzlies made an impression in their first postseason appearance.

Golden Valley won the second game and lost a tight third game, 28-26, before losing the fourth and decisive game, 25-21.

Golden Valley’s Alec  Schlossman had 16 kills. Teammate Ryan Kessler had 12 kills.

The Saugus softball team is back on top of the Foothill League.

After a 4-2, extra-inning win over Valencia, Saugus can do no worse than finish in a tie for first place. For the first time since 2000, the Valencia softball team will not be the Foothill League champions.

Erika Escedy hit a two-run home run for Saugus in the top of the eighth inning to give Saugus a two-run cushion. She was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Jenna Kelly drove in the first run for Saugus with a double in the first inning. Alyssa Rodriguez gave Saugus a 2-0 lead with an RBI double in the second inning. Saugus leads the Foothill League standings with a 7-2 record. Valencia drops into a third-place tie with Hart at 5-4.

The West Ranch softball team shut out Canyon, 6-0, to stay in the league championship hunt. West Ranch, at 6-3 in Foothill League play, is a game back of Saugus with one to play.

West Ranch starter Bailey Foster tossed a two-hitter. She struck out seven and walked two.

Kylie Sorenson and Lauren Lindvall each homered for West Ranch. Sorenson was 2-for-3 with a double and scored two runs.

The Hart softball team shut out Golden Valley, 10-0. Hart starter Emili Escamilla tossed four scoreless innings and Lauren Anderson had a a two-run single. Hart’s Elizabeth Henry hit a two-run home run and Jessica Jones added a solo shot.

In the NHL playoffs, the Detroit Red Wings are a win away from completing a miraculous comeback. The Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks, 3-1, in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Sharks were up 3-0, but have lost the last three games of the series.

Game 7 is in San Jose on Thursday night.

In the NBA playoffs, the Chiacgo Bulls beat the Atlanta Hawks, 95-83, and have a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
