Valencia Boys Volleyball Team Sets State Record

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys volleyball team beat Saugus in four games and won a state record 97th league match in a row.

Valencia broke the mark of 96 straight league wins set by Loyola High School.

Kurt Fults led the Vikings with seven kills. Broc Oppler and Griffin Nichols each had six kills apiece for Valencia.

The Valencia and West Ranch boys golf teams tied for first in a Foothill League match at Robinson Ranch. It was the first time in nearly two years that West Ranch did not win a league match outright.

Both teams shot 376 on the Mountain Course at Robinson Ranch. West Ranch’s JJ Holen shot the low round of the day, a 4-under par 67.

Daniel Kim led Valencia with a 2-under par 69. Three other players from Valencia shot in the 70s. Jonathan Chang was even-par at 71.

In high school tennis, the Hart boys team beat Golden Valley, 10-8. The Valencia boys beat Saugus, 17-1.

The Master’s College baseball  team lost to Cal State San Marcos, 12-6. Ryan Shackelford went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and scored three runs.

The West Ranch baseball team shut out Valencia, 2-0, and handed the mighty Vikings their second Foothill League loss of the season.

West Ranch starter Ryan Keller shut down Valencia with a five-hitter. He struck out five in the complete-game win.

JC Cloney drove in a run with a single in the first inning. Josh Heinz added an RBI groundout to give West Ranch a two-run lead in the first.

The Santa Clarita Christian baseball  team beat California City, 7-3. Starter Ryan Fullarton tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts. Jake Kaiserski was 1-for-3 with a three-run triple for Santa Clarita Christian.

In another stunner, the Hart softball team beat Valencia, 6-3, scoring four runs in the fifth inning. It was the first time Hart beat Valencia in nearly three years. The last time was on April 15, 2008.

Blake Lewis was 2-for-3 with a home run and drove in three runs for Hart. Elizabeth Henry also homered for Hart in the second inning.

Valencia scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Kristina Brackpool drove in two runs with a single to centerfield. Cailtlin Rooney also drove in a run.

The Saugus softball team shut out Canyon, 11-0, in six innngs. Jenna Kelly hit two home runs and was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Randi Jossett hit a home run, drove in two runs and scored two runs.

The West Ranch softball team beat Golden Valley, 10-5, behind a two home run day from Janelle Lindvall. She went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs.

Kylie Sorenson was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and scored two runs.

The Kings lost to the San Jose Sharks, 6-5, in overtime and are down two games to one in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

The Kings blew a 4-0 lead. Brad Richardson had a goal and an assist and the Kings scored three times in the first period to take the early lead.

The Sharks scored five goals in the second period to tie the game. Ryane Clowe scored twice for the Sharks.

Devin Setoguchi scored the game-winner in the first sudden-death overtime period.

Game 4 of the first-round NHL playoff series between the Kings and the Sharks is Thursday night at Staples Center.

The Lakers face the New Orleans Hornets in Game 2 of the opening round of the NBA playoffs tonight. The Lakers are down, 1-0, after losing a uninspired Game 1, 109-100.

The Lakers might get a boost after Lamar Odom won the NBA’s sixth-man award yesterday.

The game is set to tip off at 7:30 tonight.
