Valencia Boys Volleyball Team Ties State Record

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys volleyball team swept Hart in three games and set a state record for league wins in a row. Valencia won its 96th straight Foothill League match and tied the mark set by Loyola High School in 2006.

Valencia narrowly won the first two games and had to fend off a pesky Hart team. The Vikings won the first game, 27-25, and the second game, 25-23. Valencia finished off Hart decisively, 25-17, in the third game.

Kurt Fults led Valencia with 12 kills in the match. Eric Ensing and Broc Oppler each had 10 kills. Griffin Ender had 11 digs and Shane Nazarian recorded 37 assists.

The last time Valencia lost a Foothill League match was in 2001. Canyon beat the Vikings in five games.

Valencia heads to the Santa Barbara Varsity Tournament this weekend.

The Master’s College baseball team beat Azusa Pacific, 8-3, scoring six runs in the top of ninth inning to rally for the win.

Chris Talley and Bryan Mitchell each drove in two runs with singles in the ninth inning. Spencer Downs was 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored two runs for The Master’s College.

The College of the Canyons baseball team beat Citrus College, 8-1, behind a three-RBI day from Juan Perez. He knocked in two runs in a five-run second inning. Cal Vogelsang also drove in two runs in the inning.

COC starter John Salas went the distance, giving up one run on six hits.

The Golden Valley softball team beat Canyon, 4-3, and won its first Foothill League game in nearly three years.

Golden Valley scored all four runs in the fifth inning. Sydney Herrera drove in the eventual game-winner on a squeeze play bunt that scored Branndi Melero. Herrera also pitched the complete game and earned the win.

Canyon had a 3-0 lead. Courtney Ziese knocked in two runs with a double in the first inning for Canyon.

In another shocker, the Valencia softball, ranked No. 4 in the nation by USA Today, lost to West Ranch, 7-6. Kylie Sorenson and Lauren Lindvall hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to cap the comeback win.

Valencia starter Carly Mortensen left the game in the sixth inning with an arm injury. She was expected to be evaluated by a doctor today. She struck out seven and left the game with a 5-4 lead.

Lindvall finished the game 2-for-4 with a double. Her sister, Janelle Lindvall, went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run home run.

The Saugus softball team crushed Hart, 12-2, in a game at the Hart PONY Complex. Randi Jossett hit a two-run home run for Saugus. She was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Seven Centurions collected at least two hits each in the game.

Ashley Butera and Alyssa Rodriguez each had two hits and drove in two runs for Saugus.

The Trinity Classical Academy softball team beat First Lutheran, 28-1, in an Omega League game.

Julia Howell went 4-for-4 and Kaeli Massetto was 4-for-5 for Trinity.

The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team beat Faith Baptist, 7-5, in a Heritage League game at The Master’s College. Danny Curry drove in four runs and collected three hits for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Valencia boys tennis team stayed undefeated with an 18-0 win over Hart. Evan Tikka swept his singles sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, for Valencia.

The Saugus boys tennis team beat Canyon, 15-3. The three Saugus doubles teams did not lose a set, going 9-0.

The Saugus boys and girls track and field teams pulled off a sweep over Hart in a Foothill League meet at Hart High School. The Saugus boys won, 82-54. The Saugus girls won 113-23.

The Kings lost to the San Jose Sharks, 3-2 in overtime, in Game 1 of the NHL playoffs.

The Kings scored two goal in the second period. Dustin Brown tied the game, 1-1, and Justin Williams knotted the game 2-2 later in the period.

Joe Pavelski scored the game winner in overtime for the Sharks.

Game 2 of the first-round playoff series against the Sharks is Saturday night in San Jose. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 7.
