Valencia Boys Volleyball Team Wraps Up Eighth Straight Foothill League Title

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys volleyball team won its eighth straight Foothill League championship with a three-game sweep over Hart.

Valencia finished with an undefeated league record and has won 92 league matches in a row.

The Golden Valley boys volleyball team beat West Ranch in five games and finished in third place in the Foothill League standings.

Golden Valley won the first two games of the match, but West Ranch came back and won the next two. Golden Valley closed out the match with a 15-10 win in the fifth set.

Alec Schlossman had 26 kills to lead Golden Valley. Teammate Andrew Raulinaitis had nine kills.

The Saugus boys volleyball team beat Canyon in four games.

Saugus setter Ryan Mason directed his team with 41 assists and T.J. Jeffris and Colby Wilson each notched 12 kills.

Curtis Van Grinsven had a game-high 16 kills and four blocks for Canyon.

In high school softball, Valencia wrapped up its 10th Foothill League championship with a game to spare. By beating Hart, 6-3, Valencia has a three-game cushion with one game to play. Valencia is undefeated at 8-0 in the league standings. Hart and West Ranch each have 5-3 league records.

Valencia’s Carly Mortensen pitched a complete game and wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning against Hart.

Bethany Kemp was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple. She drove in two runs with a double in the fifth inning. Lauren Boser added a run-scoring triple in the inning.

West Ranch beat Golden Valley, 13-2, scoring eight runs in the third inning. Bailey Foster got the win and drove in three runs for West Ranch. Teammate Michaela Hernandez was 2-for-4 with two doubles and drove in two runs.

The Saugus softball team beat Canyon, 3-1. Saugus scored one run in the third inning and another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Canyon cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth when Hayley Bottino scored on a delayed steal.

A day after making the NBA all-defensive team, Lakers Kobe Bryant earned a spot on the All-NBA team. He was joined by NBA MVP LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat were also on the first All-NBA team.

The Dodgers got a ninth-inning grand slam from Andre Ethier and beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-3, ending a little two game losing streak.

But it was far from an ideal way to end the game. Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton blew a two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning and almost wasted a spectacular effort by starter John Ely.

But Ethier blasted a grand slam over the center field wall. It was his second grand slam of the season.

The Colorado Rockies are headed to Dodger Stadium tonight. It will be Hiroki Kurado for the Dodgers vs. Esmil Rogers for the Rockies. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
