Valencia Earns No. 4 Seed In CIF Northern Division Football Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Valencia football team earned the No. 4 seed in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs and will play Highland, the fourth-place team from the Golden League, in the first round on Friday night.

The playoff pairings for the Northern Division playoffs were released on Sunday. Four teams from the Foothill League earned playoff berths.

“I think we’re good right where we’re at,” said Valencia coach Larry Muir. “It’s a reflection of the excellent season we’ve had so far. We’re where we’re supposed to be.”

Valencia won the Foothill League championship with a 5-0 record. But Valencia was tested by Canyon, Hart and Saugus.

Canyon had the lead three times in the first half before Valencia pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Hart led at halftime against Valencia, only to lose the game on two long touchdown runs by running back Steven Manfro.

Saugus held the potent Valencia offense to 14 points in the season finale, but the Centurions could only muster three points of their own.

“That was a good football game,” Muir said about the Foothill League finale against Saugus. “They did a real good job. I’m happy with our defense. They bent a little bit, but didn’t break.”

Canyon, the second-place team from the Foothill League, will play Palmdale in the first round.

West Ranch, the third-place team from the Foothill League, opens playoffs on the road against Palos Verdes, the second-place team from the Bay League.

Saugus earned the only at-large bid into the Northern Division playoffs. The Centurions were 5-5 and finished in fourth place in the Foothill League standings. They will play Oaks Christian, the No. 1 seed in the Northern Division playoffs, in the first round.

Oaks Christian finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Marmonte League with St. Bonaventure and Westlake. St. Bonaventure earned the No. 2 seed and Westlake, the reigning Northern Division champions, was the third-seed in the playoffs.

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
