Valencia Fares Well In Pierce College Girls Volleyball Tournament

khts_sportsThe Valencia girls volleyball team compiled a 9-2 record, second only to Campbell Hall, in the Pierce College summer high school tournament over the weekend.

Campbell Hall won the tournament, beating Chaminade, 25-22, in the championship match.

West Ranch was 8-3 and came in fourth place in the tournament. Saugus went 6-5 and lost to West Ranch and Valencia.

In auto racing, it was a rough night for Rich DeLong III of Santa Clarita in the NASCAR Super Stocks race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

DeLong lost his lead in the Super Stocks standings at the track after a seventh-place finish in the race on Saturday night. Curtis White of Norwalk finished second in the race and took over the lead in the Super Stock standings.

Eric Sunness of Chatsworth won the race.

In hockey, the Kings signed vetern forward Ethan Moreau to a one-year contract. Moreau turns 36 next month and has spent 15 years in the NHL. Last season, he scored one goal and had five assists in 37 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In baseball, the Angels beat the Orioles, 7-1, and have a four-game winning streak. Jerome Williams, making his first start in the majors in nearly four years, gave up a run on six hits in seven innings and completed the sweep of the visiting Orioles.

In other games, the White Sox shut out the Rangers, 10-0, the Rays beat the Mariners, 8-7, and the Blue Jays shut out the A’s, 1-0.

The Yankees blanked the Twins, 3-0, the Tigers slipped past the Indians, 8-7, and the Red Sox beat the Royals, 6-1.

In the National League, the Braves shut out the Diamondbacks, 1-0, the Giants beat the Astros, 6-4 in 11 innings, and the Padres beat the Marlins, 4-3.

The red-hot Brewers beat the Mets, 6-2, the Nationals knocked off the Phillies, 5-4 in 10 innings, the Reds squeaked past the Pirates, 5-4, and the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 6-2.
