Valencia Football Team Has Foothill League Championship In Sight

khts_sportsThe Valencia football team will look to wrap up the Foothill League championship tonight against Saugus.

But beating Saugus is no gimme.

Valencia is coming off a 49-17 win over Golden Valley. The Vikings are 4-0 in league play and have a four-game winning streak.

Saugus is coming off a 21-20 loss to West Ranch, but the Centurions are in a fight for their playoff lives. Saugus has a strong running game with Tyler Watt and Jared Carbajal.

Watt rushed for 155 yards and scored all three touchdowns in the game against West Ranch.

Carbajal, the quarterback for Saugus, has rushed for 715 yards and five touchdowns this season. He had 85 yards on 15 carries against West Ranch.

Speaking of West Ranch, they are on the verge of making the playoffs for the first time in school history. West Ranch is tied with Saugus for third place in the Foothill League standings. Both teams have 2-2 league records.

West Ranch gets a struggling Hart team at College of the Canyons tonight. West Ranch fullback Trevin Manuel is coming off a two-touchdown game against Saugus, including the game-winner in the third quarter.

Hart has lost three games in a row and is in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in coach Mike Herrington’s 22-year career.

Hart is coming off a 36-29 loss to Canyon last week, but there is at least one bright spot.. Dylan Edwards has been running the ball effectively for Hart. He had 166 yards on 30 carries and scored a touchdown against Canyon.

Canyon finishes the Foothill League regular season against Golden Valley. Canyon’s Darius Rudolph rushed for 169 yards sand scored two touchdowns against Hart.

Golden Valley is still in search of its first Foothill League win. They have a puncher’s chance with Isa Bey at receiver. He caught the two touchdown passes for Golden Valley against Valencia.

In high school golf, the three girls from Hart saw their season and high school careers come to an end in the Women’s Southern California Golf Association Foundation Tournament.

Hart seniors Brenna Carlson, Nikki Prichard and Amanda Corr did not qualify for the next round of CIF playoffs, the state championship at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.

Carlson and Prichard missed the cut by four strokes on a day of low rounds at the Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta.

Carslon and Prichard each shot 3-over par 75s. The cut to advance to the state tournament was 1-under par, 71.

Kaitlin Park of Beckman had the low score of the tournament with a 6-under 66.

Carlson and Prichard tied for 20th. Corr shot an8-over par 82.

In the NHL, the Kings are home tonight for a game against the Dallas Stars at Staples Center. The Kings have won four games in a row, including Saturday night’s 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators.

The Stars are coming off a 5-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Both teams should be well-rested. Neither has played since Saturday night.
