Valencia Football Team Opens Against Notre Dame

khts_sportsThe Valencia football team opens its season tonight at home against Notre Dame from Sherman Oaks. Senior Alex Bishop returns at quarterback and as does senior Steven Manfro at running back.

Valencia, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll, won the Foothill League championship and advanced to the semifinals of the Northern Division playoffs last year. Bishop and Manfro lead an experienced Valencia football team as it starts defense of its Foothill League championship.

Canyon also opens its football season Saturday night at home against Burroughs. Canyon is the ninth-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll. Burroughs lost to Saugus, 26-20, last Friday night.

Saugus will look to improve to 2-0 on the road against Muir tonight. Both teams won their season openers. Muir beat San Gabriel, 46-12.

In other games, Golden Valley plays Royal at Canyon High tonight. Golden Valley is coming off a 31-19 win over Simi Valley last week.

Hart travels to Palmdale for a game against the favorite to win the Golden League championship. Hart won its season opener, 21-7 over El Camino Real.

West Ranch is on the road and will face Lancaster. West Ranch lost its season opener to Nordhoff last Friday night.

Santa Clarita Christian, the reigning CIF Division 1 8-man champions, starts its season against First Lutheran at Valencia High School on Saturday. Santa Clarita Christian is the third-ranked team in the CIF Division 1 8-man poll, behind top-ranked Windward and Thacher.

In high school volleyball, the Santa Clarita Christian girls swept Trinity in three games to win their season opener. Next up for Santa Clarita Christian is the Laguna Blanca Tournament which starts on Saturday.

In college soccer, the College of the Canyons women’s soccer team tied Consumnes River, 1-1. Canyon High graduate Beth Barker scored for COC on a penalty kick in the 50th minute. COC is undefeated at 2-0-2 after four games.

In college football, College of the Canyons is on the road and will play Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday. COC beat Antelope Valley College, 35-7, in its season opener last weekend.

The UCLA Bruins face their first Pac-10 opponent of the year on Saturday. The Bruins will take on Stanford at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night. UCLA lost its season opener to Kansas State, 31-22.

The 16th-ranked USC Trojans will play Virginia in its home opener at the Coliseum on Saturday. USC beat Hawaii, 49-36, in its season opener.

The Dodgers can’t even beat the lowly Houston Astros. The Astros scored three runs in the sixth inning and beat the Dodgers, 3-2. Rookie Chris Johnson hit a three-run home run off Dodgers starter Ted Lilly.

The Dodgers have lost six games in a row and are now three games under .500.

The Dodgers and Astros continue their weekend series tonight. It will be Hiroki Kuroda for the Dodgers against J.A. Happ for the Astros. Pregame starts at 4:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
