Valencia Football Team Well Represented On All-CIF Team

khts_sportsFour football players from Valencia High School made the All-CIF Southern Section Northern Division first team as selected by the Football Coaches Association.

Running back Steven Manfro, quarterback Alex Bishop and offensive lineman Zach Wermich earned spots on the offensive first team.

Linebacker Ryan Gorman made the defensive first team.

Two players from Canyon made the All-CIF Northern Division team. Receiver Drew Wolitarsky earned a spot on the offensive first team. TJ Yonkers made the defensive first team as a defensive back.

Three players from Vasquez High made the All-CIF Southern Section Northeast Division team. Receiver Zac McGuire made the offensive first team. Defensive lineman Michael Brosseau and defensive back Armando Alonso made the defensive first team.

Four players from Santa Clarita Christian earned spots on the All-CIF 8-man Division I team. Running back Daniel Green and lineman Zach Cronin made the offensive first team. Linebacker Ryan Espinosa and defensive back Chris Fechtelkotter made the defensive first team.

The Trinity Classical Academy had one player on the All-CIF 8-man Division II team. Shane Larsen is the first football player in school history to earn All-CIF recognition.

There is a full slate of Foothill League basketball and soccer games today.

The Hart boys basketball team will be looking for its fourth league win in a row at home against Canyon.

Valencia boys basketball team is home for a game against West Ranch. Saugus is on the road against Golden Valley.

On the girls side, Canyon takes its undefeated 5-0 league record on the road against Hart. Saugus is at Golden Valley and West Ranch is at Valencia.

The Hart boys soccer team is home for a game against Canyon. The Saugus boys travel to Golden Valley. West Ranch is at Valencia.

The Saugus girls soccer team is home against Golden Valley. The Valencia girls are at West Ranch and Hart is at Canyon.

The Master’s College men’s basketball team beat San Diego Christian, 52-44, and snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Kevin Dyer led The Master’s College with 12 points on a poor shooting night for the team. Leif Karlberg and Joey Fuca each scored 11 points and the team shot 30.6 percent from the field.

The Master’s College women’s basketball team beat San Diego Christian, 85-49, and won its second game in a row.

Lena Rivera led the way with 21 points for The Master’s College. Teammate Theresa Brown had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

In high school soccer, the Santa Clarita Christian girls lost, 1-0, to Milken. Goalkeeper Natalie Keoshian made five saves in the loss. It was the first Heritage League loss of the season for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys soccer team lost to Milken, 4-0, and dropped to 1-2-1 in Heritage League play.

Kobe Bryant is the lone Los Angeles Laker to earn a starting spot on the NBA All-Star team. The starters for the Western and Eastern Conference All-Star teams were announced Thursday.

Bryant is an all star for the 13th straight time in his career. He is one appearance behind Shaquille O’Neal and Karl Malone, who each were selected to the NBA All-Star team a record 14 times.

Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets, Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets, Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder and the injured Yao Ming from the Houston Rockets were selected as starters on the Western Conference All-Star team.

West All Star coach Gregg Popovich from the San Antonio Spurs will get to select Ming’s replacement, most likely Tim Duncan.

Miami Heat teammates Dwyane Wade and LeBron James are starters on the Eastern All Stars. They are joined by Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls, Amare Stoudamire from the New York Knicks and Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic.

The NBA All-Star game is Feb. 20 at Staples Center.
