The Valencia girls volleyball team took control of the Foothill League standings in a match against Saugus that ended with a marathon fourth game.
Valencia won the first two games of the match against Saugus, but dropped the third. The fourth and final game ended, 31-29, in favor of Valencia.
The win gives Valencia a 6-1 league record. Saugus is tied for second place with West Ranch, each with a 5-2 league marks.
Setter Carly Carapella had 38 assists for Valencia.
The West Ranch girls volleyball team swept Canyon in three games.
Angel Rutledge had 11 kills and three blocks and teammate Jenelle Futch had 17 assists for West Ranch.
Canyon’s Khrista Prudencio had 19 digs and three kills.
The Hart girls volleyball team beat Golden Valley in three games.
Golden Valley’s Megan Badovinac had eight kills and teammate Hannah Acree had 16 digs.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls swept Milken in three games. Natalie Keoshian had eight kills and eight digs for Santa Clarita Christian.
The Trinity Classical Academy girls volleyball team beat West Valley Christian in four games.
Julia Howell had 11 kills for Trinity.
In college volleyball, the College of the Canyon’s women’s team lost to Citrus College in four games.
Valencia graduate Megan Lavo and Golden Valley graduate Lindsey Murachanian each had 13 kills for COC.
The Master’s College women’s volleyball team lost to Concordia in three games.
Sam Dougherty had a team-high eight kills.
In college soccer, The Master’s College women’s soccer team beat Westmont, 2-1, and won its third game in a row.
Robyn Estrada gave The Master’s College, the fourth-ranked team in the NAIA, a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 34th minute. Emily Bruton extended the lead to 2-0 with a second-half goal in the 46th minute.
Westmont scored its only goal in the 59th minute.
The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team beat L.A. Mission College, 6-0. Kristen Grunhold recorded a hat trick and Beth Barker scored two goals for COC.
Grunhold scored her first goal in the 26th minute to give COC a 2-0 lead. She scored again in the 37th minute to put COC up 3-0.
Barker scored her first goal of the game in the second half and gave COC a 4-0 lead.
Grunhold’s third goal of the game came in the 57th minute and put COC up 5-0.
The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team beat Allan Hancock College, 5-1, behind a hat trick from Jorge Serrano. Hany Helmy scored two goals for COC.
In basketball, the NBA season opened last night with three games.
The Lakers rallied in the second half and won their season opener against the Houston Rockets, 112-110, at Staples Center.
The Lakers were down by 15 points in the first half and went into halftime trailing the Rockets by 11.
Kobe Bryant scored 27 points, but it was newcomer Steve Blake who scored the game-winning basket. His 3-pointer with 18.8 seconds left gave the Lakers the lead.
The revamped Miami Heat lost to the Boston Celtics, 88-80. Ray Allen led the Celtics with 20 points. LeBron James scored a game-high 31 points in his debut for the Heat.
The Portland Trail Blazers beat the Phoenix Suns, 106-92.
In hockey, the Kings are in Chicago for a game against the Blackhawks tonight. The Kings are in the middle of a five-game road trip and have won their past two games. They are coming off a 3-2 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche.
The Blackhawks have lost two in a row, first to the St. Louis Blues and the most recent against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
