Valencia, Hart Girls Tennis Teams Advance To Second Round Of CIF Playoffs

The Valencia and Hart girls tennis teams are moving on in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Valencia easily took down La Canada, 16-2, in the first round of the playoffs. The Vikings doubles teams dominated the match, winning all nine sets against La Canada.

The Hart girls beat Chadwick, 10-8, in a tight match in the first round. Freshman Natalia Munoz, Hart’s No. 1 singles player, swept her sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

The CIF tennis playoffs continue on Friday.

In college soccer, The Master’s College men lost to Biola, 2-1 in overtime, in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament.

Joey Mikulas gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal in the eighth minute.

Biola tied the score in the second half with a goal in the 59th minute and won the game scoring in the 91st minute.

In drag racing, Johnny Ahten, the captain at Fire Station 76 in Valencia, lost in the first round of the NHRA Big O Tires Nationals at The Strip in Las Vegas.

Jim Whiteley beat Ahten in the first round of elimination in Top Alcohol Dragster.

In baseball, the Dodgers signed reliever Brandon League to a three-year contract. He is expected to be the team’s closer in 2013.

The Angels traded starter Ervin Santana to the Kansas City Royals for a minor league relief pitcher. Santana was 96-80 with a 4.33 ERA in eight seasons with the Angels.

The Royals sent left-hander Brandon Sisk to the Angels for Santana.

In the NBA, the Clippers won their season opener, 101-92, over the Memphis Grizzlies at Staples Center. Jamal Crawford scored 29 points off the bench in his Clippers debut. Six players scored in double figures for the Clippers.

The Lakers lost to the Portland Trail Blazers, 116-106, and are 0-2 to start the season.

Dwight Howard scored 33 points and had 14 rebounds. Kobe Bryant dropped in 30. The Lakers and Clippers meet on Friday night at Staples Center.
