Valencia High graduate Delaney Knudsen and Mira Costa’s Skylar Caputo made an impressive run in the FIVB 19-under Beach Volleyball World Championships in Portugal.
The pair reached the round of 16 in the international beach volleyball tournament. They lost to Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Taina Silva Bigi from Brazil, 2-0. The Brazil team went on to win the gold medal.
Knudsen and Caputo beat a team from Norway, 2-1, to reach the round of 16.

In auto racing, Alex Tagliani, driving for the Barracuda Racing team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta in the Izod IndyCar Series, scored a pair of top 20s in the Honda Indy Toronto weekend in Canada.
Tagliani was 17th in the first race and was denied a top-10 finish after he was spun out in the closing laps of the race.
He bounced back with a 10th-place finish in the second race. It was Tagliani’s first top 10 since the season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The next race in the IndyCar Series is the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Complex.
In baseball, Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A’s won the home run derby, outslugging Bryce Harper from the Washington Nationals, 9-8, in the final round.
Cespedes, the Cuban-born outfielder, hit 17 home runs in the first round and cruised to the final round.
The All Star Game between the National League and the American League is tonight. Pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who leads the National League with a 1.98 ERA, is the lone Dodger on the All Star team.
The All Star Game from Citi Field in New York starts at 5 tonight.
