Valencia High Graduate Madison Shipman Selected To All American Softball Team

A pair of Valencia High graduates earned some national recognition this week.

Madison Shipman, a shortstop on the University of Tennessee softball team, was selected as an All American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

She helped the Lady Volunteers reach the championship round of the NCAA Women’s College World Series against Oklahoma. Shipman, a junior at Tennessee, hit .367 with 11 home runs entering Monday’s game against Oklahoma.

Max Homa, a senior at UC Berkeley who won the NCAA individual golf championship in Georgia last week, was selected as the Southern Golf Association National Amateur of the Month for May.

Homa shot a course record 61 at the Los Angeles Country Club North Course in the opening round of the Pac-12 championship.

He shot 9-under 201 to win the NCAA individual title at the Capital City Country Club Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings are back in the Western Conference finals after a 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3 at Staples Center.

Justin Williams and Slava Voynov gave the Kings a 2-0 lead. The Blackhawks scored a goal at the end of the second period to cut the Kings lead in half.

But the Kings scored an empty-net goal at the end of the third period to put the Blackhawks away.

The Blackhawks still lead the series, 2-1. Game 4 is at Staples Center on Thursday night.

In baseball, the Dodgers beat the visiting San Diego Padres, 9-7, behind another stellar night from Yasiel Puig. The Dodgers rookie hit two home runs and drove in five runs in his second major league game.

He hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning. He hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning to give the Dodgers a 9-6 lead.

The Dodgers can go for the sweep against the Padres tonight at Dodger Stadium.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
