The Valencia football team meets a high-scoring Quartz Hill team in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs tonight.

Valencia put up 43 points in its first round game against Paso Robles. Quartz Hill is averaging 36.4 points per game this seaosn and beat Canyon, 56-49, in September.

Speaking of Canyon, the Cowboys play the surprise team of the Northern Division playoffs, Atascadero.

Even though Atascadero has a losing record at 5-6, the Greyhounds knocked out Palmdale, the top-seeded team in the Northern Division playoffs, last week in the first round.

Canyon cruised in its first-round game, but they will have to travel to Atascadero in the quarters.

The Hart football team plays Palos Verdes, the No. 3 seed in the Northern Division playoffs and the champion of the Bay League.

Hart pounded Arroyo Grande in the first round of the playoffs, 48-6. The Indians are looking for a little revenge too. Palos Verdes beat Hart, 15-14, in the playoffs last season.

This year’s game between Hart and Palos Verdes is at College of the Canyons tonight. Kickoff is at 7:30.

The Trinity football team is in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II 8-man playoffs. The Knights play Joshua Springs tonight at Valencia High School.

Trinity is looking to reach the CIF championship game for the first time in school history.

In high school cross country, six teams from the Foothill League will compete in the Southern Section Division II championships at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday.

The Golden Valley boys are looking to repeat as champions of Division II. The Saugus girls are looking to recapture the Division II title they lost to Simi Valley last year.

Valencia’s Olivia Pear is racing in the girls Division I meet.

In baseball, Buster Posey and Miguel Cabrera won the MVPs. Posey, the catcher for the San Francisco  Giants, was the National League batting champion.

Cabrera, the third baseman for the Detroit Tigers, won the triple crown, leading the American League in hitting, home runs and RBIs, for the first time since 1967. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels was second in the American League MVP voting.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
