Valencia Softball Team Wins Foothill League Opener With Big 7th Inning Rally

The Valencia softball team won its Foothill League opener, 9-6, over Saugus, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Saugus was up 4-0 in the fifth inning before Valencia made its comeback. The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.

Saugus took a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning, but the Valencia girls had one last surge in them.

Nicole Joseph capped the rally with a walk-off, three-run home run to win the game.

The West Ranch softball team beat Hart, 12-1, in six innings in the Foothill League opener for both teams.

Kylie Sorenson hit two home runs and drove in four runs for West Ranch. Lauren Lombardi had a double and four RBIs.

The Canyon softball team beat Golden Valley, 7-3, scoring three runs in the seventh inning.

Tiffany Dyson was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Amanda Doyle capped the three-run seventh with an RBI double.

In high school volleyball, the Hart boys beat Valencia in three games and ended a 13-year losing streak to the Vikings. Tanner Tengberg led the Indians with 13 kills.

In high school golf, the West Ranch boys won a Foothill League match by 13 strokes over Hart at Valencia Country Club. West Ranch shot 406 as a team and won its third league match in a row.

West Ranch’s Joey Downey shot the low round of the day, a 2-over 74.

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the New Orleans Hornets, 104-96, and leap-frogged the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Jazz lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 90-80. The Lakers have a half-game lead over the Jazz with four games to play.

In the NHL, the Kings lost to the Dallas Stars, 5-1. The Kings have lost three of four games to the Stars this season.

Drew Doughty scored a goal in the first period to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. But the Stars scored four goals in the third period to win the game.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost the San Diego Padres, 9-3. The Padres scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game.

Game 2 of the series in San Diego is tonight. Chad Billingsley will start for the Dodgers against Eric Stults for the Padres.
