Valencia Tennis Team Advances To Second Round Of CIF Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys tennis team is moving on in the CIF playoffs. The West Ranch and Saugus tennis teams didn’t make it out of the first round.

Valencia, behind the heroics of No. 3 singles player Chris Pope, beat West Covina, 15-3, in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Pope swept his sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to pace the Vikings to a first-round win. The doubles team of Cameron Braun and David Myers swept their sets as well, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

The West Ranch tennis team lost to San Luis Obispo, 11-7, in its first-round playoff match.

The Saugus tennis team lost to Esperanza, 16-2.

In high school diving, Golden Valley’s Drake Nelson is in fourth place after the prelim portion of the Southern Section championships.

Valencia’s Derek Rider is in ninth place and Carter Hardin is in 11th after the first day of competition.

Canyon’s Connor Ferris is in 10th place and his brother Logan Ferris is in 13th place. The finals are Saturday in Riverside.

In high school baseball, Santa Clarita Christian shut out Saint Monica, 5-0. Ryan Fullarton tossed a four-hitter and struck out 12. Christian Broadbent had two hits, a double and a triple, and drove in a run.

The Trinity baseball team lost to Concordia, 6-5, in an Omega League game. Dakota Prochnow was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.

In high school ice hockey, Saugus beat Valencia, 3-1, in the Ice Station Valencia league.

Canyon lost to West Valley, 12-1. Bakersfield beat the Northerners, 4-3, and Hart beat Burbank, 10-1.

In the NBA playoffs, the Clippers could not finish off the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 5. The Grizzlies were in control from the tipoff and won 92-80 in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs.

The series returns to L.A. with the Clippers up 3-2. Game 6 is Friday at Staples Center.
