Valencia Volleyball Team Advances To Second Round Of CIF Playoffs

Four teams from the Foothill League made it to the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs. Only one will advance to the second round.

Valencia, the reigning national champs, swept a scrappy Simi Valley team, 32-30, 25-17, 25-23, on Friday night. Canyon, Saugus and Hart all lost their first round matches.

Canyon lost on Thursday to Brentwood in four games. Saugus lost to Saddleback and Hart was swept by Westlake on Friday night.

Valencia’s John Souisa and Broc Oppler each had a team-high 11 kills in their win over Simi Valley. Josh Duarte had five kills and four blocks.

“They’re a great passing team. They were really scrappy, got the ball over the net,” Souisa said.” They came out really strong and we took them a little too lightly.”

Valencia plays El Modena, the first-place team from the Century League, on Tuesday. El Modena beat Arcadia in four games in the first round of the Division II playoffs.
