Valencia Wins Fifth Straight Valley Invitational Baseball League Game

khts_sportsThe Valencia baseball team beat Royal, 7-2, and won its fifth game in a row in the Valley Invitational Baseball League.

Valencia scored five runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Nick Rivas drove in two runs in the inning with a one-out single. He was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Valencia collected 13 hits in the game. A.J. Balta was 3-for-5 with a double, scored two runs and drove in one. Michael Fischbach was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jake Roberge and Nick Talmo each had two hits and scored a run for Valencia.

West Ranch shut out Taft, 12-0, behind a perfect 3-for-3 day from J.C. Cloney. He had a double, drove in two runs and scored one.

Four West Ranch pitchers combined to give up four hits and strike out nine. Starter Steven Farnworth went two innings with five strikeouts. He gave up one hit and walked one.

Valencia and West Ranch are tied for first place in the Valley Invitational Baseball League standings with Chatsworth. All three teams have 12-3 records.

In other Valley Invitational Baseball League games, Golden Valley lost to Crespi, 12-2. Tanner Swire was 1-for-1 with a double and scored a run.

Hart lost to Alemany, 3-1. Tyler Glasnow drove in Hart’s only in the seventh inning. Steven Rosso was 2-for-3 and collected two of the three hits for Hart.

The Lakers blinked and signed Derek Fisher to a three-year contract for a reported $9 million.

After meeting with LeBron James and the revamped Miami Heat, Fisher, a key component to the past five Lakers championship teams, decided to return to Los Angeles and play with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.

In the Home Run Derby at Angel Stadium, David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox hit 11 home runs in the final round and beat Florida Marlins shortstop Hanely Ramirez.

The 11 home runs Ortiz hit was the most in the final round since Bobby Abreu hit 11 in 2005.

The All Star game starters will be Ubaldo Jimenez from the Colorado Rockies for the National League and David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League.

Jimenez has a 15-1 record and threw the first no-hitter in Rockies history in the first half of the baseball season. Price is 12-4 with a 2.24 ERA and leads the American League in both categories.

Andre Ethier, the only Dodger in the starting lineup, will be in centerfield and hit seventh for the National League All Stars. Ethier is the Dodgers regular right fielder, but will be playing out of position. Corey Hart of the Milwuakee Brewers is in right field for the All Star game.

The All Star game is tonight at Angel Stadium in Ahaheim.
