Valencia’s Alison Lee Qualifies For U.S. Women’s Open Golf Tournament

khts_sportsValencia freshman golfer Alison Lee has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open for the second year in a row.

Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania is the site of the U.S. Women’s Open beginning on July 8.

The 15-year-old Lee shot a 5-over par 147 at Mission Viejo Country Club in the two-day qualifier. She was the top amateur and was second overall at Mission Viejo, finishing two shots behind pro Tiffany Joh. The top four golfers advanced to the U.S. Women’s Open.

Lee finished in 26th place in her first U.S. Women’s Open last year at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Penn. She shot a 1-under par 70 on the final day of the four-day tournament.

In high school softball, Valencia will be home for the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. They play Orange Lutheran.

Orange Lutheran, the third-place team from the Trinity League, is coming off a 4-1 win over Foothill.

Hart is on the road and will play Corona in its quarterfinal game of the Division I playoffs.

Corona, the third-place team from the Big VIII League, beat El Modena, 1-0, in the second round of the playoffs.

In auto racing, the Indy car for Bryan Herta Autosport is nearly rebuilt and ready for Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. Valencia’s Bryan Herta, the owner of the team, said the car his driver Sebastian Saavedra crashed during qualifying is 80 to 90 percent repaired.

Saavedra is ready to get back in the car as well. He was examined at a nearby hospital after crashing and was cleared to race this weekend.

Saavedra will be the only driver in the Indy Lights Firestone Freedom 100 on Friday night and the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

The biggest concerns for the Lakers as they prepare for Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference Finals are Andrew Bynum’s knee and Kobe Bryant’s minutes.

Bynum has been playing with a torn meniscus throughout the playoffs. He scored only two points in Game 3 against the Suns. But he was good for 12 points and eight rebounds in Game 4. The Lakers lost both games.

Bryant is averaging nearly 42 minutes a game. He played 45 minutes and scored a game-high 38 points in Game 4, again a loss to the Suns.

The series is tied at two games apiece. Game 5 is tonight at Staples Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6.

The Dodgers and Wrigley Field were lights out last night. The Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs, 8-5, in a game that was delayed 18 minutes because of a power outage caused by a nearby fire.

The fire interrupted television coverage, but not the Dodgers offense. James Loney had three hits and drove in a run. The Dodgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Casey Blake hit a home run in the ninth inning and drove in two runs.

The Dodgers wrap up their series with the Cubs today. It will be John Ely for the Dodgers against Ted Lilly for the Cubs. Pregame starts at 11 this morning on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
