Valencia’s Delio Wins SCGA Amateur Match Play Golf Championship

NickDelioValencia’s Nick Delio won the SCGA Match Play Championship at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta on Wednesday, defeating the reigning SCGA Amateur champion, Austin Graham of San Clemente.

Delio, who plays for Cal State Northridge golf team, had to rally after Graham came back from being down three holes with five holes to play. Graham closed the gap with birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, but Delio maintained his lead over the final two holes.

“My length (off the tee) is a huge advantage in match play,” Delio said after his win. “Normally I’m always playing second, so I know what I have to do from the fairway based on what my opponent does.”

The Saugus High graduate was up one with the par-3, 18th hole left to play. Both players parred the last hole, giving Delio the win and the Match Play Championship.

The Big West Conference preseason coaches poll has the Cal State Northridge men’s soccer team ranked fourth. The CSUN team has a strong senior contingency, including Hart High graduate Devin Deldo. Deldo is one of seven seniors on the team, but sat out most of his junior season recovering from an injury he sustained in the team’s first game against Georgetown.

UC Santa Barbara is the preseason No. 1 team in the Big West Conference.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
