Valencia’s Drake Wins CIF Track Championship

Aly Drake entered the CIF State Track and Field Championship as the only representative from Valencia High School in the meet. She came home as the only state champion from the Foothill League.

Six athletes from the Foothill League competed in the CIF state meet in Clovis over the weekend.

Saugus High School sent five to the meet. Four of them were in the girls 3,200 race. Daniel Swarbrick competed in the shot put and discus.

Drake, a senior who is headed to the University of San Francisco in the fall to play soccer and run track, won the 800 race recording the fastest time of any runner from the Santa Clarita Valley in the history of the meet.

Sophomore Kaylin Mahoney led the quartet of runners from Saugus in the 3,200 race. She finished third. Teammate Stephanie Bulder, also a sophomore, finished fifth.

Swarbrick was fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus. All three were medalists, finishing in the top six in their events, at the state meet.

Freshman Karis Frankian was 15th and senior Anne Randall was 18th in the 3,200 race.

In auto racing, R.J. Johnson, a driver from Canyon Country, won the NASCAR Super Trucks race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night. It was his second win of the season at the track.
