Valencia’s Madison Shipman Earns CIF Division I Softball Player Of The Year Honor

khts_sportsMadison Shipman joined an exclusive list of Valencia softball players to win the CIF Division I player of the year award. She is the third softball player from Valencia to earn the honor. Jordan Taylor won the award in 2007 and Jessica Spigner won it in 2008.

Shipman was one of three players from the Foothill League to earn spots on the All-CIF teams.

The senior shortstop batted .411 and hit three home runs. She is headed to the University of Tennessee in the fall.

Valencia teammate Carly Mortensen, a sophomore pitcher, made the All-CIF Division I first team. She was 22-1 with a 0.89 ERA and had 203 strikeouts in 164 2/3 innings.

Hart’s sophomore third baseman Tracy Chandless also made the All-CIF team. She hit .427 and had seven home runs.

Emily Gordon from Vasquez High made the All-CIF Division 7 first team. Teammates Paula Collici and Vanessa James made the second team.

On the baseball side, Valencia’ Trey Williams earned a spot on the All-CIF Division I first team. He led the Foothill League with 10 home runs and hit .376 with 32 RBIs.

The Valencia baseball team lost to Crespi, 7-2, in the Valley Invitational Baseball League. Crespi scored two runs in the first inning and added three more in the fifth to go up 5-0.

Crespi starter Scott Heineman shut out Valencia for five innings giving up only three hits. He walked five and struck out two.

Valencia scored two runs in the sixth inning. Alex Lightfoot had a RBI double and Lukas Foster added an RBI single in the inning. Johnny Ives was 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run for Valencia.

Valencia starter Jake Roberge went five innings and gave up five runs on five hits. He had four strikeouts and walked five.

It’s starting to get ugly for the Dodgers. The Angels rallied and came from behind to beat the Dodgers, 6-3. The Angels have won four in a row against the Dodgers. The Dodgers have lost five in a row.

Bobby Abreu tied the game with a three-run home run in the sixth inning. They tacked on another three runs in the seventh inning and chased Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw.

The Dodgers had a 3-0 lead, scoring two in the third inning on RBI singles by Andre Ethier and James Loney. Matt Kemp hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Kershaw shut out the Angels for five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth.

Howie Kendrick broke the 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the seventh inning.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
