He defeated T.J. Bordeaux of Tacoma, Wash., 2 and 1, to advance in the Amateur Championship.

Homa, a sophomore at UC Berkeley, plays Carter Newman from Augusta, Ga., in the second round of match play this morning. The third round will be played later in the afternoon.

Jeff Wilson from Fairfield, Calif., the leader after the first two round of stroke play, lost in the first round of match play. He is the first medalist since Chris Mundorf to lose in the first round of the USGA Amateur Championship in 2001.

The reigning USGA Amateur Champion, 18-year-old Ben An from Bradenton, Fla., won his first round match, 3 and 2, over David Dannelly of Clemson, S.C.

An will play Alex Shi Yup Kim from Fullerton in the second round.

In hockey, the Kings added a defenseman to their already impressive list of blue liners.

Unrestricted free-agent Willie Mitchell signed a two-year deal with the Kings. He scored four goals and had four assists in 48 games with the Vancouver Canucks last year. Mitchell also racked up 48 penalty minutes. He missed 34 regular season games and the playoffs after sustaining a concussion in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 16.

Mitchell had career highs in games played, 82, assists, 20, and points, 23, in the 2008-09 season.

The Dodgers won a game using a bullpen by committee and keeping Jonathon Broxton away from the ninth inning.

James Loney knocked in two runs in the fifth inning and the Dodgers won 5-4 against the Milwaukee Brewers. It was the Dodgers second win in a row.

Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven innings, striking out six and allowing four runs on seven hits.

Four Dodger relievers pitched the final two innings, with Octavio Dotel recording the final out and earning his 22nd save. Broxton pitched a scoreless eighth inning striking out one.

The Dodgers can go for the sweep today against the Brewers. It will be Carlos Monasterios for the Dodgers against Yovani Gallardo for the Brewers. Pregame starts at 10:30 this morning on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
