Valencia’s Steven Manfro Scores 5 TDs Against Birmingham

khts_sportsThe Valencia football team got another huge game from running back Steven Manfro in a 47-6 win over Birmingham last night.

Manfro racked up 337 total yards and scored five touchdowns in his team’s second win of the season. Valencia had a 40-0 lead at halftime and the defense held Birmingham to under 100 yards on offense.

Valencia quarterback Alex Bishop threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Reed caught a 53-yard TD pass and Matt Nyberg reeled in a 25-yarder just before halftime.

The Saugus football team committed four turnovers and lost its first game of the season, 24-13, to Buena.

Saugus quarterback Jared Carbajal was 8-of-15 passing for 111 yards and a touchdown. He threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Michael Visser that gave Saugus a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

But Carbajal threw two interceptions and Buena scored 17 unanswered points to take a 10-point lead at halftime.

On the bright side, Saugus recorded five sacks in the game and intercepted Buena quarterback Kendrick Mathis twice.

The West Ranch football team won its second game in a row, 24-7, over Eastside. Quarterback Connor Eichten threw two touchdowns for West Ranch. He threw one to Josh Guzman and his second to Max Newlin. Four Wildcats combined for 149 rushing yards led by Ben Milleman’s 78 yards on eight carries.

The Canyon football team started slowly, but looked impressive in its 35-0 shutout of Highland. Canyon’s Kyle Possell intercepted a pass in the second quarter that set up the Cowboys’ first touchdown.

Jonathan Jerozal capped the ensuing drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Jerozal threw two touchdowns later in the game and was 18-of-33 for 189 yards passing.

The Hart football team rebounded with a 21-10 win over Burroughs. Tim White had two interceptions and caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cory Mayes. Joey Cicoria also had an interception for Hart.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team is in action tonight against Maricopa in an 8-man football game.

Trinity Classical Academy is home against Ojai Valley School in another 8-man football contest tonight.

In college football, the College of the Canyons football team is home against Citrus College on Saturday night. COC is 1-1 and is coming off a loss to Mt. San Antonio College, the top-ranked team in the state.

The Dodgers can’t even play the role of spoiler right. They lost to the San Francisco Giants, 10-2. Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez struck out a career-high 12 batters and the Giants took over first place in the National League West standings.

The San Diego Padres lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0, and lost their lead in the NL West.

Russ Mitchell hit his first major league career home run to lead off the fifth inning for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are home tonight for a weekend series with the Colorado Rockies. It will be Hiroki Kuroda for the Dodgers against Ubaldo Jimenez for the Rockies. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
