Vikings Stumped in First-Ever CIF Division 1 Playoff Game, Lose 44-6 to Mater Dei

The Valencia Vikings’ season is over after losing 44-6 to the Mater Dei Monarchs, the No. 2 team in the country, on Friday night.

In their first-ever CIF Division 1 playoff appearance, the Valencia Vikings were knocked out in the first round by the reigning CIF Division 1 national champions. The Vikings played valiantly with Senior defensive-end and linebacker Ben Seymour leading the charge, but were unable to stop the Mater Dei Monarchs.

Valencia Vikings fans turned out in force for an exciting debut into CIF Division 1 playoffs against some of the best talent that high school football has to offer in the country. Despite the daunting competition, the Vikings, and their fans, were excited to take on the challenge, and their energy was present throughout the game.

“I’m just so proud of, like, us, as a team. We fought and we knew it was going to be tough going in, but we just played ‘Viking’ football. We didn’t back down… we just went out, and tried our best, and gave them our best shot,” said Senior defensive-end and linebacker Ben Seymour.

Despite the final score being 44-6, the Vikings were down only 28-6 heading into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t find the offense they needed to get back in the game. However, the crowd was loud and supportive throughout, and most everyone on the home side stayed until the end to congratulate their team on achieving 10 consecutive Foothill League titles during the regular season.

“I’m proud of our guys. You know, they battled until the end, and you look at guys like Ben Seymour, for all the years he has battled here… and you can watch it on the field, he battled all night long play after play,” said Vikings’ head coach Larry Muir.

“Guys like Tanner Miller, Davis Cop, guys that put so much support into the program. Nothing but proud of every single one of those guys and the senior class, and the way they handled themselves.”

There will be a lot of new faces on the team next year seeing as the Vikings’ roster had 33 Seniors out of 80 listed, which is nearly half the team. Key players such as quarterback Davis Cop and Seymour are among those graduating.

The tough loss to end their season aside, the Valencia Vikings have a lot to be proud of as a CIF Division 1 competitor, and as Foothill League Champions for the tenth consecutive season.
