West Ranch Baseball Team Beats Canyon, Creates Logjam Atop Foothill League Standings

The West Ranch baseball team broke out the big bats against Canyon in a Foothill League game. The Wildcats won, 13-8, and created a four-way tie for first place in the Foothill League.

West Ranch pounded out 16 hits and scored six runs in the second inning.

Jagger Rusconi had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in two.

The Valencia baseball team beat Golden Valley, 8-3. Jared Oliva had two hits and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

The Saugus baseball team beat Hart, 7-6. Chris Devery hit a grand slam to give the Centurions a 6-1 lead in the third inning. Nick Warren hit a two-run home run in the first inning and was 3-for-3 with a double.

West Ranch, Valencia, Saugus and Canyon are tied for first place in the Foothill League with 4-2 records.

In high school swimming, the Hart boys and girls teams swept Saugus in a Foothill League meet at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.

The Hart boys won, 116-52. The Hart girls won, 112-58. The Hart boys won nine events and all three relays at the meet.

Tamara Santoyo was a double winner for the Hart girls in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

The Valencia swim teams swept Canyon in a Foothill League meet. The Valencia boys won 132-38. The Valencia girls won, 130-40.

The West Ranch boys and girls swim teams won their meets against Golden Valley. The West Ranch boys won 129-39. The West Ranch girls won, 127-24.

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 113-106, to stay a game ahead of the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

It was the first time this season the Lakers won back-to-back games on the road. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Kobe Bryant scored 47 points and was a perfect 18-for-18 from the free-throw line.

The Lakers have a one-game lead over the Jazz with three games to play.

The Clippers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 111-95. Seven Clippers scored in double figures. Chris Paul had 19 points and 11 assists.

In baseball, the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres, 4-3. Chad Billingsley, coming off the disabled list, won the game for the Dodgers. Carl Crawford homered and tripled. He is hitting .464 in the first week of the season.

The rubber game of the three-game series is tonight in San Diego.

In the NHL, the Kings are home for a game against the Colorado Avalanche. The Kings are in a little funk, with two losses in a row. The most recent, 5-1, against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
