West Ranch Baseball Team Closing In On First Place In VIBL

khts_sportsThe West Ranch baseball team is back at the top of the standings in the Valley Invitational Baseball League.

Behind a pair of wins this week, West Ranch is a game behind Valley North, the first-place team in the summer baseball league.

West Ranch beat St. Francis, 12-6, and Harvard-Westlake, 6-2. JC Cloney drove in three runs for West Ranch against St. Francis. Justin Hovis had three hits.

Jagger Rusconi had two doubles and drove in two runs for West Ranch against Harvard-Westlake. West Ranch starter Cody Bennett won his fifth game of the summer league.

In other games, Hart beat Saugus, 6-5, and Canyon beat Simi Valley, 12-1, on Tuesday.

On Monday, Hart beat Burroughs, 4-3, Saugus beat Rojos, 3-2, Agoura beat Valencia, 16-3, and Golden Valley lost to the Gas House Gang, 14-7.

The 38th annual College of the Canyons cross country series begins tonight. It is the first of seven races on tap for the summer. The race begins at 7.

In baseball, the Angels lost to the Tigers, 5-4, and had their four-game winning streak snapped.

In other games, the A’s shut out the Mariners, 2-0, and the Rangers clobbered the Orioles, 13-5.

The Rays beat the Twins, 12-5, the Royals beat the White Sox, 4-1, the Indians beat the Yankees, 5-3, and the Red Sox beat the Blue Jays, 6-4.

In the National League, the Giants beat the Padres, 6-5 in 14 innings, the Brewers beat the Diamondbacks, 3-1, and the Braves downed the Rockies, 9-1.

The Nationals beat the Cubs, 5-4, the Astros beat the Pirates, 8-2, the Marlins beat the Phillies, 7-6 in 10 innings and the Reds beat the Cardinals, 9-8 in 13 innings.
