West Ranch Baseball Team Eliminated From CIF Playoffs

khts_sportsThe West Ranch baseball team lost to El Modena, 5-3, and was eliminated from the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

El Modena jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. But West Ranch cut the lead, 3-2, in the fourth inning. Josh Heinz drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Aaron Watkins knocked in JC Cloney with a single.

El Modena tacked on two insurance runs the fifth inning before West Ranch mounted a seventh-inning rally.

Down 5-2, West Ranch pushed across a run on an RBI double by Matt Blake in the seventh inning to cut the lead to two runs. The Wildcats had the tying runs on first and third, but Heinz tapped back to the pitcher to end the game and West Ranch’s season.

El Modena moves on to play Lakewood on Friday.

Valencia freshman Sophie Fiscella won the 50 freestyle at the CIF Southern Section Masters swim meet in Irvine and became the first swimmer from the Santa Clarita Valley to win a Masters meet event since 2008.

She won the 50 freestyle in 24.16 seconds. Fiscella was seventh in the 100 freestyle and swam on the 200 freestyle relay team for Valencia. The relay team was 13th.

Valencia teammate Micaela Velasquez finished fourth in the 200 freestyle breaking the school record in 1:51.76. She was fifth in the 100 freestyle and on the 200 freestyle relay team.

The Hart softball team’s wild-card game against Upland was rained out and was rescheduled for today. The winner will play Simi Valley in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs on Thursday.

The Vasquez softball team opens the Division 6 playoffs at home against Holy Family on Thursday.

The Trinity Classical Academy baseball team opens the Division 7 playoffs with a wild-card game against Coast Union today.

In the Amgen Tour of California, Greg Henderson of New Zealand took over the lead and won the second stage from Auburn to Modesto.

Henderson entered the second stage of the Tour of California in 11th place. Ben Swift, the winner of stage one, finished second. Peter Sagan of Slovakia is third.

Stage three of the Tour is from Livermore to San Jose starting this morning.

In the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 6-5, to even the Eastern Conference finals at a game apiece. The Bruins scored five goals in the second period and held on to win Game 2.

Game 3 is Thursday in Tampa Bay.

In the NBA playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 121-112, to take Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. Dirk Nowitzki scored 48 points to lead the Mavericks.

Game 2  is Thursday night in Dallas.
