West Ranch Baseball Team Puts Up A Sweet 16 Against Canyon

khts_sportsThe Valencia, Hart and West Ranch baseball teams won their Foothill League openers in crushing fashion.

The Golden Valley, Saugus and Canyon baseball teams have some work to do.

The biggest blowout of the day came in the game between West Ranch and Canyon. The Wildcats won, 16-1, and were up 11-0 in the second inning. Freshman Jagger Rusconi drove in three runs and had a triple. JC Cloney hit a two-run home run.

Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champion, beat Golden Valley, 13-5. Keston Jiura drove in three runs and Johnny Ives had three hits for Valencia.

Hart took care of Saugus, 8-2, but the final margin of victory could have been much bigger. The Indians left nine runners on base and were down 2-0 after the first inning.

Hart reliever Rickey Torres pitched four scoreless innings and Luke Persico was 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove in two runs.

In high school softball, Hart’s Tracy Chandless drove in seven runs in a doubleheader against San Marino, but the Indians came away with only one win.

Hart beat San Marino, 20-10, in the first game. Chandless drove in five runs and collected three hits in the first game. Blake Lewis hit two home runs and drove in six runs for Hart.

The two teams tied, 4-4, in the second game. Chandless had another big game, with a home run and two RBIs.

The Golden Valley softball team begins play in the Quartz Hill Varsity Tournament today in Lancaster.

The Santa Clarita Christian softball team is on the road and plays Frazier Mountain later on today.

It was not a good day for area tennis teams.

The Valencia boys lost to Viewpoint, 10-8.

The West Ranch boys lost to Buckley, 12-6.

In college basketball, The Master’s College men lost to Southwestern Assemblies of God, 80-73, in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament in Indiana.

Chris Patureau scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds off the bench to lead The Master’s College.
