West Ranch Baseball Team Ranked No. 5 In CIF Preseason Poll

khts_sportsThe West Ranch baseball team is ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preseason poll, the highest ranked team from the Foothill League.

West Ranch went 18-9 and finished in second place in the Foothill League with a 10-5 record last year. The Wildcats lost to Esperanza in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champs, was not ranked in the top 10.

Edison from Huntington Beach was ranked No. 1 in the Division 1 preseason poll.

The Vasquez baseball team came in at No. 5 in the Division 6 preseason poll. Oxford Academy is No. 1 in Division 6.

Two softball teams from the Foothill League are in the top 10 Division 1 preseason poll. Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champion, is No. 5 and Hart is No. 9.

Santa Margarita is ranked No. 1 in Division 1.

The Valencia boys volleyball team is ranked No. 4 in the Division 2 preseason poll. Laguna Beach is the top-ranked team in Division 2.

The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won the third Western State Conference match of the season by eight strokes over Glendale.

Max Cohen shot an even-par 72 at the Saticoy Country Club to lead COC and all golfers in the tournament. Derek Larson was 4-over par at 76, followed by James Holly at 5-over 77.

COC has an 18-match winning streak in conference.

The West Ranch boys golf team won its season opener by three strokes over Arcadia at the Santa Anita Golf Course.

JJ Holen shot the low round of the day with a 2-over par 74. CJ Espino and Kyle Blatchford were each 6-over par at 78.

West Ranch plays Santa Barbara at Montecito Country Club on Thursday.

The Saugus baseball team opens at home against St. Bonaventure today.

The Golden Valley softball team opens at home against LA Baptist today.

There is also a full slate of boys volleyball games today. Canyon is at Quartz Hill, West Ranch is home against Paraclete and Saugus travels to play Lancaster.

The Valencia boys tennis team is home against San Marcos. The Saugus boys tennis team hosts Simi Valley and the Canyon boys tennis team is on the road against Quartz Hill.

In college baseball, College of the Canyons travels to play Allan Hancock College.

The Kings added a winger to their roster at the trade deadline. They added Dustin Penner from the Edmonton Oilers for a prospect and draft picks. Penner has 21 goals and 39 points in 62 games this season.

In addition, the Kings signed forward Justin Williams to a four-year extension.

But the Kings didn’t have much success on the ice. They lost to the Detroit Red Wings, 7-4, and saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

The Red Wings scored three goals in the first period and took a 3-1 lead. The Kings scored three goals in the third period, when they were down 7-1. Dustin Brown scored his 21st goal of the season. Brad Richardson had a goal and an assist for the Kings.

The Kings play the Phoenix Coyotes at Staples Center on Thursday night.

The Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-5, in spring training in Arizona.

Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw pitched three innings and struck out three batters.
