The high school soccer season has a messy ending so read carefully.
The West Ranch boys are the Foothill League champions after beating Valencia, 2-1, in the league finale.
Canyon, which posted a dramatic, 3-2 victory, over league and SCV rival Hart, should be the Foothill League champion, but the Cowboys have to forfeit six games for using an ineligible player.
Because of the forfeits, Canyon drops out championship contention.
West Ranch wins its second league title in a row and Hart finishes in second place.
Canyon’s Jorge Navarro scored two goals in his team’s win over Hart, but it was probably little consolation for the Cowboys.
The Saugus boys shut out Golden Valley, 4-0. Brian Perez scored two goals for Saugus.
On the girls side, Saugus won its third Foothill League championship in a row with a 3-0 shutout over Golden Valley.
Lizzy Rivas, Emily Orr and Brenna Savoie scored for the injury-plagued Centurions, who lost two starters this season.
The Hart girls shut out Canyon, 1-0, to finish in second place in the Foothill League standings.
Hart’s Kelsey Steck scored the lone goal of the game in the first half.
The Valencia girls shut out West Ranch, 3-0. Samantha Simon scored two goals for Valencia.
In high school basketball, the Trinity boys beat Hillcrest Christian of Thousand Oaks, 64-39. James Brooks had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In college baseball, the College of the Canyons beat East LA College, 4-2. Kevin Lenik and Christian Ornelas homered for COC.
In drag racing, Newhall’s Johnny Ahten was the 14th fastest in the first day of qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Winternationals at Pomona.
The captain of Fire Station 76 in Valencia lost power in his dragster after 200 feet and recorded a time of 10.505 seconds. Chris Demke was the top qualifier at 5.296 seconds.

In hockey, the Kings lost to the Florida Panthers, 3-1, their third loss in the past four games.
The Kings continue their six-game road trip on Saturday against the New York Islanders.
