West Ranch Girls Basketball Team All Alone In First Place In Foothill League

sportswestranchThe West Ranch girls basketball team is sitting pretty, all alone in first place in the Foothill League standings. West Ranch beat Golden Valley, 67-24, to improve to 4-0 in league play. Erin Ruiz and Joni Buan each scored 12 points to lead West Ranch.

The Valencia girls did something no other Foothill League team has been able to do, beat Canyon. Valencia’s Faith Anumba and Jenny Lentz each scored 16 points to lead Valencia. Canyon and Valencia are tied for second place in the Foothill League standings with 3-1 records.

 

The Hart girls won their first Foothill League game of the year, 42-30, over Saugus. Christina Falcone scored a team-high 14 points for Hart.

On the boys side, the Canyon basketball team improved to 4-0 in league with a 59-53 win over Valencia. Wesley Bartole led Canyon with 18 points and teammate Brian Nnaoji scored 16. Lonnie Jackson struggled for the second game in a row and scored 18 points for Valencia.

The Golden Valley boys narrowly escaped West Ranch with a two-point, 59-57, win. Robert Looper scored the game-winning shot, putting back a missed lay-up by Trevor Wiseman. Despite the missed shot at the end of the game, Wiseman had a huge night, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Saugus boys knocked off Hart, 77-55, behind 18 points from Brad Buchignani. Jawhar Purdy scored 12 points and had nine assists for Saugus.

In high school soccer, Golden Valley and West Ranch played to a 1-1 tie in cold, wet conditions on Friday. Kendall Moskall gave West Ranch a 1-0 lead in the second half. Golden Valley’s Joanna Lagunas tied the game with a goal later in the second half.

On the boys side, Golden Valley and West Ranch played to a 1-1 draw as well. Andres Lozano scored for Golden Valley.

In the NFL, the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints are headed to the Super Bowl. The Colts and Peyton Manning beat the New York Jets, 30-17, in the AFC championship game.

The Saints needed overtime to beat the Minnesota Vikings, 31-28, to win the NFC championship.

The Lakers lost to the Toronto Raptors, 106-105, despite 27 points and a career-high 16 rebounds from Kobe Bryant.

The Clippers got a double-double from Baron Davis in a 92-78 win over the Washington Wizards. Davis scored 11 points and had 11 assists.

In the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, rookie Ryan Dungey won his second race in a row at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. James Stewart, the reigning AMA Supercross champion, was third.
