West Ranch Loses First Game In Valley Invitational Baseball League

khts_sportsThe West Ranch baseball team suffered its first loss in the Valley Invitational Baseball League, 7-5, to Quartz Hill.

Down four runs in the seventh inning, West Ranch rallied and scored two runs. Justin Hovis knocked in both runs with a one-out single. With the bases loaded and two outs, Aaron Smirnoff flew out to end the game.

Josh Heinz drove in two runs, scored one and was 1-for-3 with a double.

Quartz Hill took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and scored four runs in the fifth to go up 5-0.

West Ranch scored three runs in the sixth inning to finally get on the scoreboard, but Quartz Hill extended its lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Jeremy McBride was 1-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs for Quartz Hill. Teammate Sho Serrano was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored two runs.

In other Valley Invitational Baseball League games, Hart beat Calabasas, 5-0. Four Hart pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Baggio Saldivar was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Luke Persico had two hits and scored a run.

Golden Valley beat Moorpark, 2-1, scoring a run in the second and another run in the third. Anthony San Miguel was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Scott Barlow pitched a complete game, giving up only one hit. He struck out eight and walked two. He was also 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in a run.

Canyon lost to Agoura, 7-6. Canyon took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning. But Agoura rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

In the College World Series, UCLA dropped Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series, 7-1, against South Carolina, the other USC. UCLA starter Gerrit Cole gave up six runs on 11 hits. He struck out only two South Carolina batters. Cole had 13 strikeouts in his first start in the College World Series.

UCLA needs to win two games in a row for the 107th national championship in school history. South Carolina is one win away from its first national championship in school history.

Game 2 of the College World Series is today starting at 4:30.

The Dodgers tried to blow a lead against the San Francisco Giants, but Casey Blake broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

The Dodgers won, 4-2, and climbed over the Giants into second place in the National League West standings. They trail the first place San Diego Padres by four games.

The Dodgers and Giants continue their series tonight. It will be John Ely for the Dodgers against Matt Cain for the Giants. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
