The West Ranch football team made history on several levels at College of the Canyons last night.

West Ranch earned its first CIF playoff berth with a 37-21 win over Hart. West Ranch also beat Hart for the first time in school history and finished with their first Foothill League winning record at 3-2.

West Ranch quarterback Connor Eichten threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Rawston Redick caught six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Matt Christensen came up with two interceptions for West Ranch that stalled a pair of Hart drives.

Hart receiver Kevin King had a big night in his team’s loss. He caught eight passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Hart running back Dylan Edwards scored two touchdowns, but the West Ranch defense held him to 25 yards rushing on nine carries.

In other Foothill League football finales, Valencia wrapped up the league championship with a 14-3 win over Saugus.

Valencia running back Steven Manfro scored a touchdown on a 76-yard run. He gained 108 rushing yards and 20 carries in the game.

Jake Reed gave Valencia a 7-0 lead catching a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Bishop.

The only offense Saugus could muster was a 37-yard field goal by James Weiner. Running back Tyler Watt rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries.

Canyon finished strong with a 47-8 win over Golden Valley and completed its turnaround season in second place in the Foothill League.

Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw five touchdown passes and finished with 367 yards.

Canyon receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught four passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Canyon running Sean Guzman set a school record with a 99-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The CIF Southern Section 8-man football playoffs begin today with Santa Clarita Christian, reigning Division I champs, taking on Riverside Prep at Canyon High School tonight.

The Trinity Classical Academy plays Immanuel Christian in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II 8-man football playoffs tonight.

In high school volleyball, the Valencia girls advanced to the third round of the CIF playoffs with a four-game win over El Dorado. Emily Elias had 15 kills in the Southern Section Division 1-A playoff match against El Dorado. Teammate Brooke Dawson had 30 digs.

The Saugus girls were eliminated from the playoffs in a three-game sweep against Los Osos. Jaclyn Clark had 15 kills and Sarah Blomgren added seven kills for Saugus.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls and Trinity Classical Academy girls were also swept out of the CIF playoffs.

Santa Clarita Christian lost to Hemet in three games in the second round of the Southern Section Division 4-A playoffs. Joanna Masopust had five kills and a team-high 11 assists.

Trinity lost to Baker Valley in three games in the second round of the Division 5-A playoffs. Julia Howell had seven kills to lead Trinity.

In high school tennis, all three teams in the CIF girls Southern Section Division III playoffs won their first-round matches.

Valencia posted an 18-0 win over Marymount. Emily Fraczek was impressive in her singles matches, winning, 6-0,  6-1, 6-0.

The West Ranch girls, the No. 1 seed in the Division III playoffs, beat Atascadero, 15-3. The doubles team of True O’Neill and Mallory Martin swept their sets, 6-1, 6-4,  6-0, to lead West Ranch.

The Hart girls won their first-round match, 11-7, over Rio Mesa. Anne Susdorf, the reigning Foothill League singles champion, won all three of her sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1.

The Lakers lost for the first time this season, 118-112, to the Denver Nuggets. Kobe Bryant had a season-high 34 points and Pau Gasol scored 17 points and had 20 rebounds.

Denver’s Carmelo Anthony poured in poured in 32 points and had 13 rebounds.

The Lakers are 8-1 after nine games.

In the NHL, the Kings beat the Dallas Stars, 3-1. Jack Johnson had a goal and an assist and the Kings remained undefeated at Staples Center. They are 7-0 at home.
