West Ranch Off To First 5-0 Start After Defeating Canyon, 35-14

Down 14-0 at home. Turnovers and a sputtering offense for most of the first half. Then, thirty-five unanswered points and a rout before you knew it.

That was the mettle West Ranch put on display last Friday, a peek inside how they’ve been able to overcome adversity to the first 5-0 record in school history.

The Canyon Cowboys’ offensive scheme was clear from the opening kick off, they wanted to run the football. Striking first, the Cowboys scored two early touchdowns on short runs to get out to a 14-0 lead.

“They are very, very good at running the ball. We knew that. We were actually [very] surprised at just how well they were able to run it,” said West Ranch Head Coach Chris Varner.

After West Ranch quarterback Weston Eget’s second interception with seven minutes left in the first half, things looked even more bleak.

But, West Ranch made the proper defensive adjustments with more players in the box to focus on the Canyon running attack and effectively shut down the Canyon offense from the second quarter on.

With under a minute to play in the first half, the Wildcats got a huge momentum boost with a rushing TD from Eget. The junior scored another touchdown on the ground midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 14-14, and from there the Wildcats never looked back.

Igniting the offense, Eget was able to connect with Jovan Camacho for two touchdowns through the air and Leron Huff added another rushing score which sealed the 35-14 comeback win.

The Wildcats (5-0, 1-0) look to continue their undefeated season in the KHTS Game of the Week at Saugus (3-3, 1-0). The Cowboys (3-3, 0-1) look to shake off the early Foothill League loss as they host the Hart Indians (3-3, 0-1) in the old rivalry.
