West Ranch Reaches Semifinals Of CIF Baseball Playoffs

khts_sportsThe West Ranch baseball team is in the final four of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

The Wildcats knocked out Orange Lutheran, the top seed in the Division I playoffs, in the quarterfinals. West Ranch won, 5-4, and will play Corona in the semifinals today at 3.

Freshman second baseman Jagger Rusconi delivered the winning hit with a two-run, ground-rule double in the sixth inning against Orange Lutheran, ranked No. 4 in the nation by ESPN HS.

Tyler Woldanski hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Justin Hovis was 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs for West Ranch.

Corona, a wild-card team from the Big VIII League, has won four playoff games in a row, including 3-0 over Valencia in the wild-card round. Corona beat El Dorado, 7-4, to reach the semifinals.

The Saugus baseball team ended its playoff run in the quarterfinals against Newbury Park. The Centurions lost, 7-3.

The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team also saw its season come to an end. The Cardinals lost to  Dunn, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Division 7 playoffs.

In high school track and field, Hart’s Tim White is one of six athletes from the Foothill League who qualified for the CIF State meet.

White finished second in the triple jump at the Masters Meet at Cerritos College to qualify for the CIF State Track and Field Championships.

Hart teammate Austin O’Neil qualified in the 1,600. He was ninth in the Masters Meet race.

West Ranch also has a pair of athletes heading to the CIF State meet. Ashley Welker will race in the 800. Nick Bultman qualified in the shot put.

Canyon’s Tiffini Stone will compete in the long jump and Karis Frankian from Saugus will race in the 3,200 for the third time in her high school career.

The CIF State meet is Friday at Cerritos College.

In auto racing, Alex Tagliani, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport, was 12th in the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500. He led two laps and had his best finish of the season in the Izod IndyCar Series.

Dario Franchitti won the Indy 500 for the third time in his career.
