West Ranch running back Jeff Coprich set a school record with 213 rushing yards in his team’s 53-21 win over Nordhoff on the opening weekend of high school football.
Coprich scored four touchdowns, including one on a 65-yard interception return. The Wildcats defense forced five turnovers and the offense racked up 531 total yards.
The Hart football team lost to Tesoro, 35-21, but freshman wide receiver Trent Irwin had an impressive debut. He caught five passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
Both of his touchdowns came in the fourth quarter. Hart trailed 8-7 in the second quarter before Tesoro scored four unanswered touchdowns to take a 35-7 lead. Hart coach Mike Herrington said it was tough to come back after that.
Hart running back Dylan Edwards gained 90 yards on 14 carries.

The Golden Valley football team lost to Simi Valley, 45-14. Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman was 14-of-28 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Isa Bey caught five passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.
The College of the Canyons football team opened the season with a 44-23 win over Antelope Valley College.
COC running back Jamie Wilson rushed for 76 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Chris Rini rushed for 50 yards and scored a touchdown.
In baseball, the Angels beat the Mariners, 7-3, and gained a game in the American League West standings.
Mark Trumbo hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Vernon Wells added a solo shot in the sixth. The Rangers lost to the Rays, 5-1, and are 2 ½ games ahead of the Angels in the American League West standings.
