The West Ranch softball team won its Foothill League opener, but might have lost its star pitcher.
West Ranch scored a run in the seventh inning and beat Saugus, 2-1. Kylie Sorenson came across with the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the final frame.
West Ranch pitcher Amanda Martin went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out three. West Ranch’s other pitcher, Bailey Foster, was declared ineligible by the CIF Southern Section prior to the game.
In the other Foothill League softball openers, Hart beat Canyon, 6-3, and Valencia poured it on against Golden Valley, 12-1.
Hart’s Lauren Anderson hit a solo home run against Canyon. Canyon’s Danielle Sullivan was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.
Valencia’s Megan Fogelsong, Madison Shipman and Bethany Kemp each hit home runs against Golden Valley. Fogelsong drove in three runs and Shipman drove in two.
The Hart boys volleyball team swept Canyon in three games. Andrew Uberstine had 12 kills to lead Hart.
The Saugus boys volleyball team beat West Ranch in three games. Setter Ryan Mason led a balanced attack for Saugus with 31 assists and five blocks. He also added five kills. Teammate Colby Wilson led Saugus with eight kills and Matt Vollmer chipped in with seven.
The Valencia boys tennis team rolled over Golden Valley, 18-0, and remained undefeated at 5-0 in Foothill League matches.
The West Ranch boys tennis team beat Saugus, 11-7. Julius Macalutas and Ali El-Arabi swept their doubles matches for West Ranch.
The Canyon boys tennis team beat Hart, 11-7, behind an impressive sweep by singles player Jason Ferlianto. He won his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.
The Saugus freshman softball team beat West Ranch, 19-4, in five innings. Natalie Garcia had two singles and drove in three runs. Ashley Bettini drove in two runs and had a single and a double. Alex Veliz collected three singles. Starter Sarah Fish gave up five hits, walked two and struck out six for West Ranch.
The Lakers got in a little postseason prep with a 106-100 win over the Sacramento Kings. Pau Gasol scored 28 points, Shannon Brown chipped in with 24 and Kobe Bryant took the night off as the Lakers prepare for the first round of the NBA playoffs.
The Lakers will face Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round starting Sunday.
The Dodgers hit four home runs and won their home opener, 9-5, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manny Ramirez hit a solo home run and Casey Blake added a two-run shot in a three-run fourth inning.
Matt Kemp hit a home run in the fifth inning and Andre Ethier blasted a three-run shot in the sixth inning.
The Dodgers continue their series with the Diamondbacks tonight. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Rodrigo Lopez for the Diamondbacks. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
