West Ranch Softball Team Wins High Desert Classic

sportswestranchChalk up another softball tournament win for the West Ranch girls.

Behind five strong innings from pitcher Amanda Martin, West Ranch shut out Saugus, 6-0, to win the High Desert Classic championship in Lancaster. Martin struck out five and gave way to Bailey Foster, who pitched the final two innings.

Bryanna De La Torre hit a two-run home run and Kylie Sorenson added a solo homer in a three-run first inning.

West Ranch added three more runs in the second inning. Lauren Lombardi drove in two runs with a single and Janelle Lindvall, the tournament MVP, knocked in a run in the second inning with a double.

The Canyon softball team lost to Village Christian, 2-1, in the fifth-place game of the High Desert Classic. Hayley Bottino pitched five innings and recorded five strikeouts. She also hit a solo home run.

In high school golf, the West Ranch boys beat Granada Hills, 3-0, in a match play event.

Four players from the Saugus girls soccer team made the All-CIF Division II team. Senior midfielder Shasta Fisher and senior forward Jamie Molacek earned first team honors. Defenders Emily Relles and Brittanie Sakajian made the All-CIF Division II third team.

Two players from the Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team at the All-CIF Division VI team. Senior midfielder Kayla Gale, who will play at The Master’s College in the fall, made the All-CIF first team. Senior midfielder Amanda Doty earned third-team honors.

In college softball, the College of the Canyons came from behind and beat Moorpark, 4-3, and lost to Mt. SAC, 7-0, over the weekend.
COC rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Moorpark. Karissa Hartwig drove in the winning running with a single to left field.

In the game against Mt. SAC, Jessica Fridwall was 2-for-2 with a walk for COC.

Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, recovering from an injured groin, took live batting practice yesterday, but ended his session early when he was hit twice and knocked down once. He was hit in the back and on the wrist after facing live pitching for only the second time in spring training.

The Kings beat the visiting Colorado Avalanche, 4-3, in overtime. Drew Doughty scored the game-winner on a power play in the overtime period. Ryan Smyth scored two goals for the Kings against his former team. Wayne Simmonds scored a goal for the Kings in the second period.
