West Ranch Takes On Top-Seeded Mission Viejo In CIF Boys Basketball Playoffs

khts_sportsThe West Ranch boys basketball team is gearing up for its biggest game in program history.

The Wildcats take on Mission Viejo, the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division 1A playoffs, tonight at West Ranch High School. Mission Viejo won 18 games in a row at one point during the season and plays a tough style of defense, allowing only 54.5 points per game.

West Ranch has been averaging 86.5 points per game in the playoffs and has posted some gaudy scores this season.

Should be an interesting match-up. Tipoff is scheduled for 7.

In college baseball, the College of the Canyons lost, 9-1, to Orange Coast College. Christian Ornelas drove in the only run for COC.

The high school baseball season has started in the Santa Clarita Valley with five teams from the Foothill League in action today.

Hart plays Quartz Hill and Valencia plays Kennedy from Granada Hills in the Easton Tournament.

Saugus is home for a game against Agoura.

Golden Valley travels to Lancaster for a game against Paraclete.

The Canyon baseball team plays Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in the Royal Invitational in Simi Valley.

In hockey, the Valencia Flyers took two of three games against the Arizona Redhawks, including an 11-1 blowout. Sebastien Beauregard scored three goals and two assists for the Flyers.

The Flyers are back on the ice tonight for a game against Long Beach.

In the NHL, the Kings traded popular defenseman Jack Johnson and a first-round draft pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for center Jeff Carter. Johnson spent six seasons with the Kings and was one of the top-scoring defensemen in the league with eight goals and 16 assists.

Carter has been hobbled by injuries and has only 15 goals in 39 games this season. He has scored at least 30 goals in a season three times in his six-year NHL career.

The new-look Kings will return to the ice on Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks at Staples Center.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
