“Definitely do your homework, do some research about the breed that you think you specifically want,” says Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto, the owner and operator of Cinema Vet in Santa Clarita. “There are times when you learn about that breed and their personalities and the problems that they can have, and then you realize that that breed might not be the right fit for you.”
Talk to your veterinarian about dogs and other pets that don’t do well in smaller homes and apartments, or can’t be left alone all day while you’re away at work.
Another thing to consider is whether or not you want a pet from a breeder or adopt one from an animal shelter.
When looking for a breeder, pricing and experience are important things to look in to.
“Go and visit the facility,” says Ronchetto. “If you want a puppy, visit with the mom and the dad of the litter, and see how big they might get, or if they have had any problems.”
