Santa Clarita is being invaded by bicycles! The City has been diligent about providing residents access to trails and bike paths in and around town, and City officials are now asking people to get out and use them.

As we may remember from our childhood, bicycling is a fun activity on its own, and it’s also great exercise.

But now, City officials are saying that biking will also relieve congestion on the roads.

Friday morning the City had a few bicyclists at City Hall to give some pointers about riding. They said that adjusting the seat height on your bicycle is one of the best ways to ensure a comfortable ride.

There are also rules to the road for bikers, some of them being similar to that of other moving vehicles. Bikes must have a mini headlight turned on once the sun goes down. They must also have a blinking light on the back of their bike to make their presence known.

There are several ways Santa Clarita is trying to entice people to get to biking, one being the upcoming Bike to Work Challenge.

On Thursday, May 17th, residents are challenged to take the “no pollute commute” to work on their bike.

Businesses are competing to see who can have the most of their employees bike to work. Free frozen yogurt from Golden Spoon goes to the winners in three categories based on business size.

Several pit stops will be set up for the commute at four areas around Santa Clarita where bikers can stop by for a drink of water, quick snack and some giveaways that include blinking lights for your bike and patch kits for tires.

Free rides on City buses will also be provided to those who load their bikes onto the front racks of the buses, and show their helmet to the driver.
