Santa Clarita’s U.S. Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon is scheduled to present a Bronze Star Medal to First Lieutenant Gabriel G. Surratt on Monday at 11 A.M. in the Newhall Veterans Historical Plaza. Honoring First Lieutenant Gabriel G. Surratt (Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan) for exceptional meritorious service from March 1, 2011 to October 2, 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Surratt will speak on the high honor of receiving the Bronze Star Medal, as well as the honor of being promoted to the rank of Captain.

First Lieutenant Surratt’s outstanding dedication to duty during combat operations in Afghanistan contributed to the overwhelming success of the command’s mission.
A California native, Surratt is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Vanderbilt University and is assigned to the Deputy Chief of Staff, G2 at Army Headquarters in the Pentagon.
He previously worked in Washington D.C. on the House Armed Services Committee, supporting staff efforts to legislate the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. Prior to his internship, CPT Surratt completed back-to-back year-long deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.
In February 2011, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Village Stability Operations intelligence officer attached to an Operational Detachment – Alpha from 3rd Special Forces Group at Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force. (Afghanistan)
Three weeks before deploying to Afghanistan, Surratt returned home from a 365-day tour to Camp Victory in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served as a team chief in charge of 11 military and civilian personnel at the Joint Intelligence and Operations Center at the United States Forces.
